Tuesday, August 22, 2017:
On Friday, August 18, 2017 the City of Phoenix announced that the anticipated re-opening of Burton Barr Central Library is estimated to be the summer of 2018. For more details regarding Friday’s announcements, see City Manager Ed Zuercher’s Memo to City Council and/or Roofing and Fire Sprinkler System Damage Assessment – Preliminary Report. We know that this news and detail is not what our community, customers and staff want to hear. We want to assure everyone who relies on being able to access “the library” at Burton Barr, we will not be absent from Central Phoenix and have made the following arrangements and commitments:
Effective Sunday, September 10, 2017 four of the locations closest to Burton Barr Central Library will be open from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. We know statistically that Sunday hours tend to be higher requested days for access to our libraries, and these libraries were selected as we acknowledge that having a library presence is important to our customers in Central Phoenix.
Phoenix Public Library is working with Burton Barr neighbors and partners within Central Phoenix that can host temporary “pop-up” library services, materials and programs. Expect more details on this soon.
We continue to make portions of Burton Barr’s 500,000+ collection available for checkout through our other 16 locations.
Phoenix Public Library has been able to reschedule and relocate programming throughout our 16 other locations. Details regarding where, when, and times can be found at Programming Updates for Burton Barr Central Library and information is organized by intended audience and subject matter. In addition to hosting Burton Barr programs, Phoenix Public Library locations have been able to add new and different programs as they utilize the resources they have received from Burton Barr. Check regularly as this page will be updated as continuing programming resources are crafted and confirmed.
We know it is very disruptive for one of our most beloved assets here in Phoenix to be temporarily out of commission. Our top priority is to continue to be “the library” in our communities, serving our public with the materials and resources we have all come to expect. Please be sure to check back regularly for updates and details as we bring Burton Barr Central Library back into full service.
