​Bridges to America


​Located on the first floor of Burton Barr Central Library, Bridges to America (BTA) assists new residents, visitors and immigrants in succeeding in all aspects of life in the United States. With English language learning as a primary focus, BTA offers customers access to print and audio books, newspapers, DVDs and other materials to expand vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and  increase reading comprehension and enjoyment.

Take a Tour of BTA

Free tours are offered the second Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m.  Registration is required.  Make your reservation by contacting Erendira Enriquez at 602-534-7768 at least one week prior to the tour date.

Learn English

BTA has books, CDs and DVDs to help customers of all nationalities who have limited or no English proficiency and wish to improve their English speaking and comprehension skills. These resources are designed for independent self-study of grammar, reading, writing, listening, pronunciation, survival English, pre-GED, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and prevocational skills.

Library staff with proficiency in languages other than English are available to assist customers in finding materials. Visit BTA or phone the Call Center at 602-262-4636.  

Talk Time

Practice your English-speaking skills!  Join us for English conversation practice Sundays 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. at Burton Barr Central Library
 
Facilitated by staff and volunteers, non-native English speakers can practice and develop their English-language skills.  Each free drop-in session focuses on a different theme or topic. Registration is not required, but participants must be 16 years old or older. ​

Foreign Language Collection

BTA has books, magazines, newspapers, CDs and DVDs for adults, including approximately 15,000 items in Spanish.  These items include reference works, fiction, biography and nonfiction, as well as Latin music, CDs and DVDs.

In addition, we have approximately 14,000 items in 20 other languages, including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian and Vietnamese. The majority of these items are fiction or have wider popular appeal.

BTA also subscribes to 43 magazines and three newspapers. Magazines can be checked out with a valid library card.

Learn Another Language

We also have CDs and DVDs to help people learn French, German, Spanish, Chinese, and other languages.
