Celebrating Frida

Artist Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907, in Coyocoán, Mexico City, Mexico. Considered one of Mexico's greatest artists, Kahlo began painting after she was severely injured in a bus accident. Kahlo married fellow artist Diego Rivera in 1929. She exhibited her paintings in Paris and Mexico before her death in 1954.

Burton Barr Central Library is hosting an exhibit of works by Phoenix artists inspired by Frida Kahlo, "Celebrating Frida," July 5 - 28, and a series of free programs about Kahlo in July.

Festivies kick off with a First Friday artists' reception July 5 with the Phoenix Fridas, including Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo, Carmen Guerrero, Emily Costello, Aniat Mabante Leach, Annalisa Rios, Monique Sanderson-Mata, Michele Delgado, Gloria Casillas-Martinez, Veronica Verdugo-Lornell and Diana Calderon.  Music will be performed by Maya Murillo and Carmen de Novais Guerrero.

Other programs include:

Feliz Cumpleaños Frida Kahlo! - 1 - 4 p.m., Saturday, July 6

"I Paint My Own Reality" - 6 - 8 p.m., Thursday, July 11

Frida Shrine Workshop with Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo - 1 - 4 p.m., Saturday, July 20 (registration required)

The Phoenix Fridas (pictured below) will offer a mercado, featuring their work, as part of the festivities on July 6 and 11.  A portion of sales from the mercado benefit the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library.
