Ocotillo Library & Workforce Literacy Center re-opened to the public on April 24, 2012 after an eight month closure for remodeling. The renovation tripled the number of public computers available at the location. New features include a First Five Years area, a community multi-purpose room, training room, study room, space for customers using WiFi and laptops to "plug in," and a reading lounge.
The project was funded through a one-time 2008-2009 Community Development Block Grant Stimulus awarded to the City of Phoenix under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The total project cost was just over $1.6 million.
The library's Workforce Literacy Center assists job seekers by offering classes in resume writing, interviewing skills, computer use, GED preparation and English as a Second Language. It also offers PhoenixWorks - a collection of materials to support workforce needs including resume writing, occupational testing, language learning and computer skills.
The library will continue to provide a full range of library services including a collection of newspapers and magazines, books, DVDs and CDs designed to meet community members' educational and recreational needs, and a Spanish-language collection with fiction and nonfiction, magazines, newspapers, fotonovelas, CDs and DVDs. The library offers programming for families including storytimes and, coming soon, programming for adults to increase employment opportunities.
