Armchair to India
The Republic of India is the seventh largest country by area, the second most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the northeast; and Burma and Bangladesh to the east. Four world religions — Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism — originated in India. Annexed by the British East India Company in the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom from the mid-19th century, India gained independence in 1947. The Indian economy is the world's eleventh largest as measured by GDP. A regional power, India has the third largest standing army in the world and ranks eighth in military spending among nations.
