Arizona Room
 
 

The Arizona Room, located on the fourth floor of the Burton Barr Central Library, contains a research collection of books, magazines, maps and other materials reflecting the heritage, lifestyle and geography of the desert Southwest from prehistoric times to the present. Topics in this carefully selected collection range from Arizona history to histories of Arizona communities and cities and Southwestern Native American tribes. Examples of additional subjects available include the water, plants, animals, archaeology, geology, art, ranching, military history, transportation, cooking and travel of Arizona.

Specialized resources include:

  • Newspaperman and Rough Rider James H. McClintock collection of correspondence, photographs and newspaper clippings
  • Arizona telephone directories - prior years with Phoenix directories to 1923
  • Arizona city directories - with Phoenix directories  to 1892
  • Phoenix high school yearbooks, including early 20th century Phoenix Union High School yearbooks
  • Arizona Census 1870 - 1930 on microfilm
  • Arizona Republic newspaper clipping files (mid 1960's - 1989)
  • University of Arizona index to Arizona Periodicals
  • Arizona 7.5 minute topographic maps
  • Phoenix aerial surveys (earliest is 1968)
  • Biographies (more than 1,200)
  • Historic maps
  • Sanborn Maps
  • Headquarters Records of Fort Verde, Arizona Territory
  • Interior Department appointment papers, Arizona Territory

Due to the nature of the collection, materials may ONLY BE USED IN THE ROOM. Copying of most materials is available at 20 cents per page and PENCILS ONLY may be used for writing.  No food or drink is permitted in the Arizona Room.
