Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- Additional tips for searching Phoenix Public Library's Arizona newspaper databases for obituaries.
1. Arizona Republic - NewsBank has full text coverage starting on January 1, 2002. You will be able to read the obituary online. To find an obituary, click on the "Customized" button just above the search box. On the next screen, you can type in the word "Obituaries" and then put in a date or range of dates following the examples listed on that page. To do a search by name, you can either type that name in the search box or put that name in quotation marks, e.g. "John Doe", in the search box to do a search by phrase. Please remember that if you put a name in quotation marks, it will look only for that exact phrase. So if the name has a middle initial in the obituary and you exclude that initial from the quotation marks, then it will not find that name.2. Arizona Newspapers (also called ProQuest's Arizona NewsStand) starts in 1986 but stops after October 31, 2001. ProQuest's Arizona Newspapers has NO FULL TEXT, only date and page number information. When looking for an obituary, the database will bring up a date and a page number for the obituary in the newspaper, but not the full text, so you will have to search the microfilm of that day's newspaper to determine if it is the obituary you are looking for. To do a search by name, you can either type that name in the search box or put that name in quotation marks, e.g. "John Doe", in the search box to do a search by phrase. Please remember that if you put a name in quotation marks, it will look only for that exact phrase. You also can limit by date using the date box in "Basic Search".
