School/ Teacher Cards

School Cards can be issued to schools for teachers who are visiting the library with their classes on a regular schedule.

The school card was developed to help teachers who are bringing children who have fines or lost items on cards or have lost their cards. Teachers can have each child select books and take them to the classroom to read. Books are to stay in the classroom and not go to student's homes. No fines accrue on the cards, but the school is responsible for lost books at the end of the school year.

In order to get a school card, the principal must sign a contract with the library stating which teachers will be getting the cards. This contract confirms that the school will be responsible for any lost or damaged items. School cards expire on June 30 of the current school year. A new contract must be signed each year listing the current teachers eligible for cards.

The card is not to be used to allow teachers to take out books for their classroom library. The class must be present at the library and the children allowed to select their own books. Children are encouraged to visit the library with their parent to get personal library cards.

School Card modifications and benefits:
  • Increases limit from 30 to 40 items
  • Increases checkout period from 3 weeks to 4 weeks
  • Eliminates overdue fines, but overdue notices will be sent
  • Validates cards for one school year only (September to June) with required payment for lost books due at the end of June.
  • Restricts use of cards to specific Phoenix Public Library branch when request was initiated.
Teachers' responsibilities:
  • Monitor books and materials checked out using printed receipts
  • Keep checked out materials at school (books are not to be taken to student's homes)
  • Teach students responsible behavior with library materials
