Becoming a U.S. Citizen
Phoenix Public Library offers online resources to help you become a U.S. citizen - from understanding the process to practicing for the citizenship test and building your vocabulary for your interview. 

You'll need a library card to use these online resources.  Phoenix Public Library cards
are free for Maricopa County residents.  Please visit any Phoenix Public Library location
to sign up for a card or pre-register online before you go. 

Getting Started

The Legal Information Reference Center has resources to help you understand the citizenship process.  Click on "Immigration & Travel" and then select "U.S. Citizenship."  

  • Read any of the three guides on immigration and naturalization. 
  • Create an online account and save a book or specific chapters from one of the books in a folder.
  • Email sections of the book or print them out. 

Practice Tests

Visit LearningExpressLibrary and select U.S. Citizenship from the left-hand side of the page. 
Click on "U.S. Citizenship Preparation."

  • Take a practice test in history and civics.
  • Read Pass the U.S. Citizenship Exam - 4th Edition online, including lessons in citizenship and voting, symbols of America, American geography, the American Revolution, The Constitution and more.  It provides a list of 100 sample questions for the citizenship exam   and information on the citizenship interview.
  • Create an account to take the practice tests and read the eBook online.

Visit Testing & Education Reference Center. Select "International Tools" and then click on "U.S. Citizenship."
  • Take timed practice tests and review a list of potential questions.
  • Read How to Become a U.S. Citizen online.
  • Create an account to take the practice tests and read the eBook online.
  • This resource also featues a "word of the day" to help you build your vocabulary.

Other Online Resources

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States.  The Citizenship Resource Center offers study materials to help you prepare for the civics test, including:

  • Videos about the naturalization interview and test, and an introduction ot U.S. history and civics;
  • Audio (MP3 format) in English and in Spanish of an official list of civics questions and answers for the naturalization test;
  • Civics flash cards;
  • Booklet containing short lessons based on each of the 100 civics questions and answers on the naturalization test; and,
  • Lists of the 100 civics questions in English, Arabic and Chinese.

The Center also provides information about the process of becoming a U.S. citizen, how to prepare for the naturalization interview and test, how to find help in your community, free information sessions in the area, and how to find a citizenship class in the area (searching by zip code).

Visit Bridges to America

New to the United States?  Start your path to citizenship at Burton Barr Central Library's Bridges to America.  New residents will find resources to help them improve their English, learn about the U.S. and prepare for the citizenship examination.  We're located on the first floor.  Everyone is welcome!

While you're in the neighborhood, visit Friendly House (723 S. First Ave.) - a local social service agency - that offers a wide range of immigration services, including asylum applications, court representation, Spanish/English translations and citizenship applications.  One Friday each month, they also offer free consultations on a first come, first served basis.  Call Friendly House at 602-416-7200 for information on the next scheduled free session.
