Phoenix Public Library Seeks Proposals for "Día de los Muertos" Exhibit Subscribe to the Phoenix Public Library Press Release RSS Feed
Phoenix Public Library, Phoenix, AZ. -- July 11, 2011 -- Burton Barr Central Library is seeking proposals for artist-made altars inspired by Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) for its @Central Gallery, located on the first floor at 1221 N. Central Ave. Proposals are being accepted from Arizona residents, 18 years or older. Deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. The exhibit will run Oct. 24 - Nov. 5.

In anticipation of Arizona's centennial in February 2012, this year's exhibit is titled, "Adorned in Memories, Written in Stone." The title is evocative of the ways generations of Arizonans have honored the memories of their loved ones in their hearts and in public spaces.

In keeping with the theme, artists are asked to reflect upon their subject's place in the mosaic that is Arizona history and submit a brief written description (200 words or less) of their proposed altar. Photographs and/or sketches may be included. Altars must be freestanding and no larger than 3 feet by 4 feet by 8½ feet.

While non-traditional altars will be considered, all altars submitted should reflect the theme and traditions of Día de los Muertos. Artists should be ready to install their altar on Saturday, Oct. 22. The submission fee is $5.

For complete submission instructions, visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org or send an e-mail to centralgallery.lib@phoenix.gov.
