On October 25, 1944, the Samuel B. Roberts, along with the other twelve vessels comprising its unit, stood between Japans largest battleship force ever sent to sea and MacArthurs transports inside Leyte Gulf. Faced with the surprise appearance of more than twenty Japanese battleships, cruisers, and destroyers the Samuel B. Roberts turned immediately to action with six other ships. The ship churned straight at the enemy in a near-suicidal attempt to deflect the more potent foe, allow the small aircraft carriers to escape, and buy time for MacArthurs forces. Of 563 destroyers constructed during WWII, the Samuel B. Roberts was the only one sunk. The men who survived faced a horrifying three-day nightmare in the sea, where they battled a lack of food and water, scorching sun and numbing nighttime cold, and natures most feared adversary--sharks.

Engineers of Victory is a new account of how the tide was turned against the Nazis by the Allies in the Second World War, the focus being on the problem-solvers: Major-General Perry Hobart, who invented the funny tanks which flattened the curve on the D-Day beaches; Flight Lieutenant Ronnie Harker the man who put the Merlin in the Mustang; and Captain Johnny Walker, the convoy captain who worked out how to sink U-boats with a creeping barrage.

History has been kind to the American generals of World War II and less kind to the generals of the wars that followed. Setting out to explain why, Thomas E. Ricks cites a widening gulf between performance and accountability. Then, scores of American generals were relieved of command simply for not being good enough. Today, as one American colonel said bitterly, A private who loses a rifle suffers far greater consequences than a general who loses a war.

In the spring of 1966, the war was still popular and the draftees of Charlie Company saw their service as a rite of passage. But by December 1967, when the company rotated home, only 30 men were not casualties--and they were among the first vets of the war to be spit on and harassed by war protestors as they arrived back the U.S. In this book, the author examines the experiences of a company from the only division in the Vietnam era to train and deploy together in similar fashion to WWIIs famous 101st Airborne Division.

On December 17, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, more than eighty unarmed United States soldiers were shot down after having surrendered to an SS unit near the small crossroads town of Malmedy, Belgium. Although more than thirty men lived to tell of the massacre, exactly what took place that day remains mired in controversy. The author spent fifteen years researching original sources and interviewing more than one hundred witnesses to uncover the truth behind the Malmedy massacre, and the result is riveting.

Food, and in particular the lack of it, was central to the experience of World War II. In this richly detailed history, Lizzie Collingham establishes how control of food and its production is crucial to total war. Tracing the interaction between food and strategy, on both the military and home fronts, Collingham demonstrates how access to food was a driving force within Nazi policy and contributed to the decision to murder hundreds of thousands of useless eaters, and brings to light the fact that famine was not only caused by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, but was also the result of Allied mismanagement and neglect, particularly in India, Africa and China. She also shows how the war subsequently promoted the pervasive influence of American food habits and tastes in the post-war world.--From publisher description.

For sixty years, World War II has been seen in black and white, in newsreels, magazines, and books. Color photography was still in its infancy when the United States entered World War II. With the war on, the short supplies of color film stock made color photographs and films even more rare. Now, specially commissioned research has unearthed a remarkable color record, much of which has never been published before. The authors have scoured the National Archives, as well as other public and private collections, to find over 300 startling color images of America at war.

Two men came to personify generalship in the Second World War: Bernard Montgomery for the British and Erwin Rommel for the Germans. In the span of a few years, they fought a series of extraordinary duels across several theaters of war. Ever since, historians have assessed their leadership, personalities, and skill. Born four years apart, the two men followed a remarkably similar trajectory. Military historian Peter Caddick-Adams explores their lives, beginning with their provincial upbringing and the brutal trench fighting of World War I--where both nearly died. Obsessed with fitness and training, the future field marshals emerged with glowing records. They taught in staff colleges, wrote infantry textbooks, and fought each other as divisional commanders in 1940 before taking charge of their respective armies as the war raged on. This first comparative biography of these two soldiers explores how each was made by their war leaders, Churchill and Hitler, and how their strategies permeate down to todays armies.--From publisher description.
