From how many frames you need to shoot per second to capture that WOW moment to where to focus on a bird with a big beak to get the best depth of field, this book has it all for the wildlife photographer. It is an impressive mix of technology with just plain good advice for image-taking, and they discuss each point specifically for shooting wildlife, because it is a totally unique type of photography. The lighting and shutter speed for a macro flower shot is not the same that youd need for a bird in flight or a kangaroo jumping across a field. Mix together this fantastic info with the many years of experience that the Gerlachs have shooting and teaching and the absolutely jaw-dropping images and you really do have a perfect storm for a book--

River notes : a natural and human history of the Colorado
            by Davis, Wade.

Plugged by no fewer than twenty-five dams, the Colorado is the worlds most regulated river, providing most of the water supply of Las Vegas, Tucson, and San Diego, and much of the power and water of Los Angeles and Phoenix, cities that are home to more than 25 million people. If it ceased flowing, the water held in its reservoirs might hold out for three to four years, but after that it would be necessary to abandon most of southern California and Arizona, and much of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. For the entire American Southwest the Colorado is indeed the river of life, which makes it all the more tragic and ironic that by the time it approaches its final destination, it has been reduced to a shadow upon the sand, its delta dry and deserted, its flow a toxic trickle seeping into the sea. In this remarkable blend of history, science, and personal observation, acclaimed author Wade Davis tells the story of Americas Nile, how it once flowed freely and how human intervention has left it near exhaustion, altering the water temperature, volume, local species, and shoreline of the river Theodore Roosevelt once urged us to leave it as it is. Yet despite a century of human interference, Davis writes, the splendor of the Colorado lives on in the rivers remaining wild rapids, quiet pools, and sweeping canyons. The story of the Colorado River is the human quest for progress and its inevitable if unintended effects--and an opportunity to learn from past mistakes and foster the rebirth of Americas most iconic waterway. A beautifully told story of historical adventure and natural beauty, River Notes is a fascinating journey down the river and through mankinds complicated and destructive relationship with one of its greatest natural resources--

On the morning of December 26, 2004, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Sonali Deraniyagala lost her parents, her husband, and her two young sons in the tsunami she miraculously survived. In this brave and searingly frank memoir, she describes those first horrifying moments and her long journey since. She has written an engrossing, unsentimental, beautifully poised account: as she struggles through the first months following the tragedy, furiously clenched against a reality that she cannot face and cannot deny; and then, over the ensuing years, as she emerges reluctantly, slowly allowing her memory to take her back through the rich and joyous life shes mourning, from her familys home in London, to the birth of her children, to the year she met her English husband at Cambridge, to her childhood in Colombo; all the while learning the difficult balance between the almost unbearable reminders of her loss and the need to keep her family, somehow, still alive within her.--Publisher description.

Sam Sheridan has traveled the world as an amateur boxer and mixed martial arts fighter; he has worked as an EMT, a wilderness firefighter, a sailor, a cowboy at the largest ranch in Montana, and in construction under brutal conditions at the South Pole. If he isnt ready for the apocalypse and the fractured world that will ensue, we are all in a lot of trouble. Despite an arsenal of skills that puts many to shame, when Sam became a father he was beset with nightmares about being unable to protect his son. If the power grid went down, how much food and water would you need? If you were forced outside the city limits, could you survive in the wilderness? And lets not even talk about plagues and attacking aliens. The problem is, each scenario requires a different skill set--so Sam decides to gain as many skills as possible.--From publisher description.

Preternaturally hardened whale dung is not the first image that comes to mind when we think of perfume, otherwise a symbol of glamour and allure. But the key ingredient that makes the sophisticated scent linger on the skin is precisely this bizarre digestive by-product ambergris. Despite being one of the worlds most expensive substances (its value is nearly that of gold and has at times in history been triple it), ambergris is also one of the worlds least known. But with this unusual and highly alluring book, Christopher Kemp promises to change that by uncovering the unique history of ambergris.

True Colors, Jana Harriss first broodmare, was more than Harris bargained for: a complex, traumatized animal whose outsized personality would transform everyone around her, both human and equine. When she arrived at Harriss farm, she was in dire shape, having survived a range fire. She was terrified, and her will to escape was enormous. In Horses Never Lie About Love, Harris lyrically recounts how this wounded, implacable beast nevertheless held a magical influence over the other horses of the ranch, and how she eased into the role of mother after having a foal. In time she became the heart of the ranch. Now 33 years old, she is a presence without whom the other horses cannot sleep at night, and whose quiet wisdom transmits strength of character that transcends the thin line between animals and the humans they love.

From the metamorphosing fairytale Frog Prince and The Tale of Jeremy Fisher, to dissections in science class, to televisions Kermit, frogs are ever-present in our childhoods. Just what is it about this slimy creature that captures our imagination? While much attention has been paid to the scientific qualities of the frog, little has been said about the large role played by this slippery amphibian in art, literature and popular culture. Charlotte Sleighs witty, readable Frog provides an entertaining and sometimes shocking account of this much-loved, and much-misunderstood animal. Sleigh provides answers to many questions, including why frogs have been so prominent in science throughout the years and just what place the frog holds in religion. The many faces of the frog are also explored, such as the devilish and comic; the sophisticated and chauvinist; the revolting and delicious. The author weaves the natural history of the frog together with their mythology in a way that has not been done before. Featuring many fine images of frogs from nature and culture, Frog will appeal to a wide audience - from those who keep these remarkable amphibians in their homes, to those who recall stories from their childhood with affection, to those who regard them as a tasty dinner. Readers will also be pleased to know that all copies of Frog are guaranteed 100% wart-free.

Under the surface : fracking, fortunes and the fate of the Marcellus Shale

Running from southern West Virginia through eastern Ohio, across central and northeast Pennsylvania, and into New York through the Southern Tier and the Catskills, the Marcellus Shale formation underlies a sparsely populated region that features striking landscapes, critical watersheds, and a struggling economic base. It also contains one of the worlds largest supplies of natural gas, a resource that has been dismissed as inaccessible until recently. Technological developments that combine horizontal drilling with hydraulic fracturing (fracking) have removed physical and economic barriers to extracting hundreds of trillions of cubic feet of gas from bedrock deep below the Appalachian basin. Beginning in 2006, the first successful Marcellus gas wells by Range Resources, combined with a spike in the value of natural gas, spurred a modern-day gold rush, a gas rush, with profound ramifications for environmental policy, energy markets, political dynamics, and the lives of the people living in the Marcellus region. This book is a journalistic overview of shale gas development and the controversies surrounding it. Control over drilling rights is at stake in the heart of Marcellus country, northeast Pennsylvania and central New York. The decisions by landowners to work with or against the companies, and the resulting environmental and economic consequences, are scrutinized by neighbors faced with similar decisions, by residents of cities whose water supply originates in the exploration area, and by those living across state lines with differing attitudes and policies concerning extraction industries. Here the author gives a voice to all constituencies, including farmers and landowners tempted by the prospects of wealth but wary of the consequences, policymakers struggling with divisive issues, and activists coordinating campaigns based on their respective visions of economic salvation and environmental ruin. He describes a landscape in which the battle over the Marcellus ranges from the very local, yard signs proclaiming landowners allegiances for or against shale gas development, to often conflicting municipal, state, and federal legislation intended to accelerate, delay, or discourage exploration. For millions of people with a direct stake in shale gas exploration in the Marcellus or any number of other emerging shale resources in the United States and worldwide, or for those concerned about the global energy outlook, this book offers a look at the issues.

Rare Birds is the story of how one mans obsession saved a species. Bermudian David Wingate was born in 1935, the same year a bird found dead at the foot of a lighthouse was identified as a cahow, or Bermuda petrel, by stunned scientists. Cahows, perhaps the most graceful and acrobatic flyers of the avian world, had been thought extinct for more than three centuries -- since shortly after humans arrived on this remote 21-square-mile island and ate them into oblivion. Despite the startling discovery, the possibility of finding these elusive, nocturnal birds alive was considered only slightly greater than that of lunching with Bigfoot. It wasnt until 1951 that American ornithologist Robert Cushman Murphy and Bermudian naturalist Louis Mowbray took a chance and mounted a bare-bones expedition to Castle Harbour, where the birds had last been seen in the early 1600s. Wingate went along for the ride, and when at length a cahow was pulled from deep within a rocky cliffside, it changed his life forever. I had a calling, he says. Bringing back the cahow was what I was meant to do.--

For most of us, traveling means visiting the most beautiful places on Earth--Paris, the Taj Mahal, the Grand Canyon. Its rare to book a plane ticket to visit the lifeless moonscape of Canadas oil sand strip mines, or to seek out the Chinese city of Linfen, legendary as the most polluted in the world. But in Visit Sunny Chernobyl, Andrew Blackwell embraces a different kind of travel, taking a jaunt through the most gruesomely polluted places on Earth. From the hidden bars and convenience stores of a radioactive wilderness to the sacred but reeking waters of India, Visit Sunny Chernobyl fuses immersive first-person reporting with satire and analysis, making the case that its time to start appreciating our planet as it is--not as we wish it would be. Irreverent and reflective, the book is a love letter to our biospheres most tainted, most degraded ecosystems, and a measured consideration of what they mean for us. Equal parts travelogue, expose, environmental memoir, and faux guidebook, Blackwell careens through a rogues gallery of environmental disaster areas in search of the worst the world has to offer--and approaches a deeper understanding of whats really happening to our planet in the process.

About four hundred million years ago earthquake activity and possibly major storms caused sudden movements of large quantities of muddy sediment along the seafloor. Animal communities in the path of these sediment-laden flows were instantly engulfed, the inhabitants frozen in the last moment of their lives. Amazingly, many of the creatures lost in this ancient catastrophe were almost perfectly preserved through the eons, fossilized in a thick series of muds now known as the Hunsrck Slate west of the Rhine Valley in western Germany. Excavations there have yielded the most diverse and surpassingly beautiful collection of marine fossils of the Devonian period ever discovered. This book pays tribute to the exquisite fossils of the Hunsrck Slate. Large full-color photographic plates display fossil sponges, brachiopods, clams, starfish, sea lilies, trilobites, worms, sea spiders, sea stars, crustaceans, corals, and many other species. An accessible commentary recounts the discovery of the fossils and explains how the slate was formed, how the animals are preserved, the significance of the fossils, and the controversies that surround them. A special presentation in every way, this book makes an exceptional contribution to the fascinating history of life on Earth--Provided by publisher.
