In the early morning hours of April 18, 1906, San Francisco and a string of towns to its north-northwest and south-southeast were overcome by an enormous shaking that was compounded by the violent shocks of an earthquake, registering 8.25 on the Richter scale. Lasting little more than a minute, the earthquake wrecked 490 blocks, toppled a total of 25,000 buildings, broke open gas mains, cut off electric power lines throughout the Bay Area, and effectively destroyed the Gold Rush capital that had stood there for a half century. Perhaps more significant than the tremors and rumbling, which effected a swath of California more than 200 miles long, were the fires that took over the city for three days, leaving chaos and horror in their wake. The human tragedy included the deaths of upwards of 700 people, with more than 250,000 left homeless. Simon Winchester brings his storytelling abilities - as well as his unique understanding of geology - to this extraordinary event, exploring not only what happened in northern California in 1906 but what we have learned since about the geological underpinnings that caused the earthquake in the first place. But Winchesters achievement is even greater: he positions the quakes significance along the earths geological timeline and shows the effect it had on the rest of twentieth-century California and American history.--BOOK JACKET.

Volcanic Worlds is the first general review of volcanic activity throughout the Solar System. Written by active research scientists, successive chapters present the evidence for extensive volcanic activity, both in the past and at the present time, on Earth and the planets of the Solar System. As well as describing the state-of-the-art of planetary volcanism, the book also shows how frontline scientists working in this field conduct their research, highlighting the aspects of danger, discovery and insight inherent in this topic. The book contains the very latest, spectacular images of volcanoes on the Earth and the planets, in both colour and black and white.--BOOK JACKET.

The author examines the enduring and world-changing effects of the catastrophic eruption off the coast of Java of the earths most dangerous volcano - Krakatoa. The legendary annihilation in 1883 of the volcano-island of Krakatoa - the name has since become a byword for a cataclysmic disaster - was followed by an immense tsunami that killed nearly forty thousand people. Beyond the purely physical horrors of an event that has only very recently been properly understood, the eruption changed the world in more ways than could possibly be imagined. Dust swirled round the planet for years, causing temperatures to plummet and sunsets to turn vivid with lurid and unsettling displays of light. The effects of the immense waves were felt as far away as France. Barometers in Bogota and Washington, D. C., went haywire. Bodies were washed up in Zanzibar. The sound of the islands destruction was heard in Australia and India and on islands thousands of miles away. Most significant of all - in view of todays new political climate - the eruption helped to trigger in Java a wave of murderous anti-Western militancy among fundamentalist Muslims: one of the first outbreaks of Islamic-inspired killings anywhere.--BOOK JACKET.

On January 14, 1993, a team of scientists descended into the crater of Galeras, a restless Andean volcano in southern Colombia, for a day of field research. As the group slowly moved across the rocky moonscape of the caldera near the heart of the volcano, Galeras erupted, its crater exploding in a barrage of burning rocks and glowing shrapnel. Nine men died instantly, their bodies torn apart by the blast. Detailing the turbulent history of Columbia and the geology of its snow-peaked volcanoes, Victoria Bruce weaves together the stories of the heroes, victims, survivors, and bystanders, evoking what it means to live in the shadow of a volcano, a hairs-breadth away from unthinkable natural calamity, and shows how clashing cultures and scientific arrogance resulted in tragic and unnecessary loss of life.--BOOK JACKET.

The volcanoes of Europe provide a fascinating array of features and processes for student, amateur and professional Earth scientists alike. Made increasingly accessible by the growth of international travel facilities, they offer dramatic landscapes, intriguing geological and geographical characteristics, and compelling histories of their interaction with those who have chosen to live on and near them from ancient times to the present day. Volcanoes of Europe captures this wealth of material in a comprehensive, clearly written, fully illustrated and thoroughly researched introductory treatment. Volcanoes of Europe features a glossary of the more technical terms that could not be avoided in the text and a vocabulary of volcanic terms used in the local languages. At the end of each chapter is a remarkably comprehensive and up-to-date bibliography, which reflects the authors command of an extensive range of sources in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. The bibliographic references include many classic texts as well as contemporary works that have made use of the most recent research based on the most modern techniques available. Volcanoes of Europe thus provides an invaluable foundation for all who are drawn to one of the most vivid and spectacular aspects of the often tense relationships between the Earth and its inhabitants.--BOOK JACKET.

Hot Spots tells the story of the earth creating itself. Eighty-four photographs depict active and dormant volcanoes, steaming geysers, and hot spots across America. From the drama of red-hot lava exploding into the ocean in Hawaii, to the ethereal wonderland of steam and mist in the geyser basins of Yellowstone, to the surreal lunar landscape of Mount Saint Helens, this book shows the many different ways to look at a volcano: geologically, photographically, and metaphorically. Pictured here are some of the most exciting places in America to visit and observe the elemental forces still at work on our planet. The book focuses on four regions of the American West: the Hawaiian Islands, the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, California and the Southwest, and Yellowstone and the northern mountain states. The dramatic landscapes of eighteen national parks and monuments in thirteen states are featured, including those of Katmai National Park in Alaska, Death Valley National Park in California, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii, Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument in Washington, and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Following the portfolio section are descriptions of each photograph, which include a wealth of geologic background as well as the myths surrounding volcanoes and the authors accounts of their adventures during the years spent completing this ambitious project. An illustrated map and a glossary round out this multifaceted exploration of Americas volcanic landscape.--BOOK JACKET.
