In 1836 in East Texas, nine-year-old Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanches, raised by the tribe, and eventually became the wife of a warrior. Twenty-four years after her capture, she was reclaimed by the U.S. cavalry and Texas Rangers and restored to her white family, to die in misery and obscurity. Cynthia Anns story has been told over generations to become a foundational American tale. The myth gave rise to operas and one-act plays, and in the 1950s to a novel by Alan LeMay, which would be adapted into one of Hollywoods most legendary films, The Searchers, directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne. Frankel explores the true-story-become-legend underpinning John Fords film, and the making of the film itself.

In this book the author tells the story of a flood of near biblical proportions; its destruction, its heroes and victims, and how it shaped Americas natural disaster policies for the next century. Fourteen states in all were hit, along with every major and minor river east of the Mississippi. The storm began March 23, 1913, with a series of tornadoes that killed 150 people and injured 400. Then the freezing rains started and the flooding began. It continued for days. Some people drowned in their attics, others on the roads when the tried to flee. It was the nations most widespread flood ever, more than 700 people died, hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings were destroyed, and millions were left homeless. The destruction extended far beyond the Ohio valley to Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, New York, New Jersey, and Vermont. In the aftermath, flaws in Americas natural disaster response systems were exposed, echoing todays outrage over Hurricane Katrina. People demanded change. Laws were passed, and dams were built. Teams of experts vowed to develop flood control techniques for the region and stop flooding for good. So far those efforts have succeeded. It is estimated that in the Miami (Ohio) Valley alone, nearly 2,000 floods have been prevented, and the same methods have been used as a model for flood control nationwide and around the world.

From the Publisher: This essential guide to ancient warfare describes the fighting methods of soldiers in Europe and the Middle East in an age before gunpowder. From a detailed examination of the individual components of an ancient army and their equipment, to a fascinating exploration of ancient battle strategies, siege warfare, and naval battles, it explores the unique tactics required to win battles with the technology available. Using specially commissioned color and black-and-white artwork and 24 full-color tactical maps, this book shows in great detail the methods by which armies, including Assyrians and Roman forces, prevailed over their foes, and why other armies were less successful. This is a must-read for any reader interested in ancient warfare.

Over the last generation, historians have broadened our understanding of colonial America by examining the interplay of Europe, Africa, and the Americans through the flow of goods, people, plants, animals, capital, and ideas. Alan Taylor presents an engaging overview of this new scholarship, showing that American colonization derived from a global expansion of European exploration and commerce that began in the fifteenth century. The English had to share the stage with French, Spanish, Dutch, and Russians, each of whom created alternative Americas. Taylor also focuses on slavery as central to the economy, culture, and political thought of the colonists and on the importance of native peoples to the colonial story. This book describes an intermingling of cultures and of microbes, plants, and animals from different continents that was unparalleled in global history.--BOOK JACKET.

On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp. The dogs were gone. Now Mawson himself plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizably skeletal, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, Which one are you? This thrilling and almost unbelievable account establishes Mawson in his rightful place as one of the greatest polar explorers and expedition leaders. Included is a trove of Frank Hurleys famous Antarctic photographs, many never before published in the United States.

From the first woman to sit on the United States Supreme Court comes this fascinating book about the history and evolution of the highest court in the land. Out of Order sheds light on the centuries of change and upheaval that transformed the Supreme Court from its uncertain beginnings into the remarkable institution that thrives and endures today. Justice OConnor weaves together stories and lessons from the history of the Court, charting turning points and pivotal moments that have helped define our nations progress, and provides a rare glimpse into the Supreme Courts inner workings: how cases are chosen for hearing; the personal relationships that exist among the Justices; and the customs and traditions, both public and private, that bind one generation of jurists to the next.--From publisher description.
