While his boss is on vacation, reporter Alvin Roberts has been writing a snappy gossip column featuring announcements of blessed events, impending births of both the married and unmarried. Although the column is not very respectable, circulation jumps, so Alvin is assigned a regular position. Soon, he is so powerful that gangster Sam Goebel sends his gunman, Frankie Wells, to threaten him. Instead, Alvin tricks Frankie into confessing to murder and records it on his dictaphone. He warns Frankie that if someone kills him, Frankie will be executed painfully. Alvins nemesis, singer Bunny Harmon, is opening a new nightclub and vows that Alvin will not be admitted, ever. Alvin, on the other hand, insists that he will be there no matter what. When singer Dorothy Lane begs Alvin, who has no scruples when it comes to his column, not to print the news that she is pregnant, he promises not to, but even though she is not married and will not name the babys father, he runs the story, disregarding the harm it may do to her. Alvin is in love with Gladys Price, another reporter on the paper, who despises his column. When Alvin discovers that Goebel is Dorothys lover and threatens to expose him, Goebel decides he must be killed. Frankie warns Alvin that Goebels men will be looking for him at Bunnys nightclub. Gladys begs him not to go, but Alvin sneaks in through the back. Although Goebels men shoot at him, Alvin is not harmed. Dorothy, however, shoots and kills Goebel. Later Alvin agrees to give up his column for Gladys, using his last column to defend Dorothy and announce his engagement. ... Contemporary sources note that the character of Alvin was based on columnist Walter Winchell--AFI catalog, 1931-1940.

Can the power of music make the brain come alive? Dr. Oliver Sacks, author of Musicophilia: tales of music and the brain, is involved with this study as NOVA follows four individuals: Matt Giordano (United States), Derek Paravicini (England), Anne Barker (Ireland), and Tony Cicoria (United States) to investigate musics strange, surprising, and still unexplained power over the human mind. While these extraordinary stories offer examples of musics unquestionable power over the mind, scientists have yet to fully understand what happens in the brain as we experience music. In an effort to unravel the mystery, NOVA puts Sacks himself into a functional MRI machine for two experiments.

Chess Records was located on the south side of Chicago. In 1947, it began recording blues music with Muddy Waters and Little Walter. This eventually gave birth to rock and roll in 1955 with Chuck Berry. Record producer Leonard Chess has an ear for this different type of music and believes he can cash in by signing up new talent such as songwriter Willie Dixon, Howlin Wolf, and Etta James. Chess makes all of his artists part of his family and takes care of them. This is not easy since they spend a small fortune on booze, drugs, and the high life. When Chuck Berry goes to jail, Leonard is able to find another talented performer, Etta James, to take his place. In the late sixties, as their music goes out of favor, Leonard Chess gets out of the record business.

On July 22, 1997, Phish performed the second show of their U.S. summer tour at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC. A thunderstorm of biblical proportion passed directly over the venue during the show, letting loose a torrential downpour of rain, thunder and lightning that accentuated the electric nature of the concert. Fortunately the recordings (captured from the multi-camera lawn feed and 5.1 audio) remained dry enough to provide the masters for this release. Walnut Creek documents the collision between a force as imaginative and powerful as Phish in the summer of 1997 and the supreme forces of nature. -- back cover.
