Framed by the picturesque Wasatch and Uninta Mountains is one of the most unique lakes in the world, the Great Salt Lake in North America, that is located north west of Salt Lake City. The water has a high salt content and few creatures are able to survive within its waters. However, numerous rare species of water fowl can be found along its banks. Salt water shrimp and brine shrimp are the staple diet of the birdlife that inhabits the Great Salt Lake and it is only in the tributaries of the lake that fish are to be found. Due to the loss of its natural outflows the Great Salt Lake lost its water by evaporationthus creating its saltiness. The lakes four tributaries carried various minerals from the surrounding mountains into the lake and its salt content further increased. Depending on the water level the salt content in some sections of the lake can reach up to twenty seven per cent and only the Dead Sea contains more salt.

Just outside the town of Page in the state of Arizona a narrow and unimpressive entrance leads into the mysterious world of Antelope Canyon. The small Antelope Creek River that is infrequently fed by additional water has, throughout the course of thousands of years, cut a fascinating canyon into the red sandstone and created a natural work of art. For thousands of centuries Antelope Canyon lay undiscovered until in 1931 a twelve year old Navajo Indian girl accidentally discovered the entrance to the canyon while herding sheep. Her discovery led to one of the most impressive slot canyons in the United States. The incredible patterns on the swirling, wave-like rock were once covered by torrents of water and now they are so smooth and perfectly shaped that they are like an artistic sculpture.

Nature has always been one of the most popular attractions in Finland and the Lemmenjoki National Park is no exception. The most impressive and also the most comfortable way to travel through the park is by boat as the scenery is, in the main, totally natural and thus has few marked paths. Vast pine forests form part of the natural scenery in Lemmenjoki and in the southern sections of the park, birch trees and spruces are part of its indigenous flora. For many years todays park was the sole domain of the Smi, Scandinavias original inhabitants, and was used by them as a traditional hunting ground and also as a grazing land for their reindeer. Archaeological discoveries revealed that the Smi survived by hunting as well as trading in reindeer, much as they do today. The park is covered with snow for seven months of the year. It is then that the temperature falls below freezing point and on average is between minus 8 and minus 18 degrees!

The finest way to travel from Siliguri to Darjeeling is by way of the Darjeeling Himalaya Toy Train. The surroundings of Siliguri are well worth a visit and just a few kilometres away is Kali Mandir, a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess, Kali and also Coronation Bridge an old but impressive structure that was designed and built by the British in 1930. The small train begins to move away slowly and travels through Siliguri, the buildings of which were constructed after the railroad. There is little traffic as only one train travels into the mountains each morning with another returning in the evening. British engineering made this railroad possible, an eighty eight kilometre railroad connection to the mountain world of the Himalayas. The idea was to transport the world famous tea of the same name from Darjeeling, quickly, economically and safely to the coast from where it was shipped to the United Kingdom.

Over 50,000 dogs and cats were left behind in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as FEMA required that all animals be left behind in the mandatory evacuation. This forced separation created Americas first-ever major animal rescue. A dedicated and compassionate group of volunteer rescuers and animal welfare groups from around the world risked their lives to sledgehammer down doors and brave toxic floodwaters in a truly heroic effort to save nearly 10,000 animals. Hurricane Heroes is a film about hope and survival in the face of one of the worst natural disasters in American history. It will renew your faith in the American spirit.

Ten kilometres west of Lhasa is one of the most important monasteries in Tibet. A pilgrimage trail leads up to Drepung Gonba that was built in 1416 by a follower of Tsongkhapas, founder of the Gelug Order which is the earliest of the four main doctrines of Tibetan Buddhism. The route to the monastery is quite arduous as at an altitude of five thousand six hundred metres the air is very thin. Along the way there are various colourful rock illustrations that give a foretaste of the Drepung Monastery. Drepung was once the richest monastery in the whole of Tibet and even with the countrys troubled history the monastery buildings are still very impressive. Fortunately, the complex was only slightly damaged during the Cultural Revolution thus the throne of the Dalai Lama has remained in tact. The subsequent Cultural Revolution brought about much social change and most of the monks escaped and sought exile abroad.

The undeniable power of the true stories of six exonerated survivors of death row will engage your emotion, incite your passion, and envelope you in their search for the lost pieces of dignity and the lives that were interrupted. The Exonerated began its journey over the summer of 2000, when authors Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen traveled across the United States, interviewing 40 of the (then) 89 former death row prisoners. They went as far south as Texas and Miami, as far north as Chicago and just about everywhere in between to meet the people whose stories appear in The Exonerated. The interviewees were from vastly different ethnic, religious and educational backgrounds. Their views on the world varied greatly. The only thing that they had in common was that all 40 had been sentenced to death, spent anywhere from 2 to 22 years on death row and were subsequently found innocent and freed by the state.

This homerun hit recalls an earlier America that fell in love with baseball and an era when owners built bigger arenas to house our fast-growing national pastime. By 1923, 15 iconic steel and concrete parks had been built, yet no two were alike: Each had its own unique character, and fans were close to the action. Narrated by Golden Globe-nominated actor Jeff Daniels, this documentary traces the history of four classic American ballparks using both archival footage and modern film: Wrigley Field (1914), Comiskey Park (1910), Tiger Stadium (1912), and Fenway Park (1912).

Gigantic skyscrapers and with a frenetic lifestyle, Toronto is where many Canadian banks and multi-national companies have their palatial offices of steel and glass built in what was once a waterfront wilderness. The old City Hall was built in 1899 in Victorian style and consists mainly of sandstone. Its Venetian clock tower faces an array of modern skyscrapers and almost opposite is the futuristic looking new City Hall, a symbol of the citys cosmopolitan flair. Its easy to become disorientated in Torontos Underground City. Most of this subterranean complex extends beneath the financial district and is the largest of its type in the world with countless shops, restaurants and subway stations.

Our journey through romantic northern Spain travels south through Galicia along the Atlantic coast. A Corua is the regions largest industrial city and shipping harbour and it thought to have been founded by the Phoenicians in 60 A.D. The Romans conquered this harbour city that has always been associated with the sea and it was from A Corua that the invincible Spanish Armada set sail in1588 to invade England. Santiago De Compostela is the capital of Galicia and since the Middle Ages it was, apart from Jerusalem and Rome, the most important pilgrimage destination in Christendom. Half a million pilgrims came here each year from all over Europe and Spains most religious city continues to attract the faithful. Some centuries ago each of the large villages of the Rias Baixas prospered due to fishing, as did Pontevedra. However, all this changed when its harbour was engulfed by sand some three hundred years ago.

With around three million inhabitants it is the largest city in Ilha Formosa, a beautiful island that is located a hundred and thirty kilometres from the Chinese mainland. The famous Grand Hotel is the most impressive building in Taipei and is in the typical Chinese palace design of the Ming Dynasty. The large interior hall of the fine building is supported by massive red pillars and it features a magnificent open staircase with marble banisters. The south western edge of the city was where wealthy trader, Lin An Tai, once had a huge residence. It is one of the most well preserved examples of a building in the style of a classical southern Chinese residence and designed according to the strict rules of Feng Shui and Chinese Geomancy.

For some, San Diego, a coastal city with a wonderful climate, is Californias southernmost city, for others it is the northernmost city in Mexico. It is not quite as predictable as other US metropolises and even the skyline promises something different. Palm trees, colourful flowerbeds and wonderful sandy beaches are typical of Southern California and are an open invitation to surfing and relaxation. The exclusivity of the beaches exudes an aura of luxurious living and the grand houses of the Coronado district are among the citys most prestigious. The long distance trains that travel through Amtrak Station connect San Diego with many other Californian cities and also with the bordering city of Santa Fe. The red tram, known as the San Diego Trolley, leaves from here and travels south to the Mexican border.

After breaking with Spain, Guadalajara became the capital of Jalisco. At the beginning of the 20th century it was the second largest city of the new Republic. The city successfully unites its centuries old history with modern times and today is considered to be a perfect example of both modern and traditional Mexico.
Since the sixteenth century Vientiane has been the capital of Laos and is situated in the heart of Indochina. The city originated at the point at which the first navigable section of the Mekong River joins with the Gulf Of Thailand. Vientiane was once a group of rural settlements and even today contains several village-like districts each with its own temple and traditional marketplace. At the end of the nineteenth century the French began to renovate the citys most important buildings and made Vientiane the administrative capital of their new colony and gave it a French look. There are some fascinating places to visit outside the city such as the Cultural Park Of The Laotian People, a large area on the banks of the Mekong River. Historic Vientiane also has some fine reconstructed buildings such as the Wat Impeng on the western bank of Pagoda Street.

It is a fascinating coastal landscape with huge castles and extensive sand dunes. Influential and wealthy ship owners once settled here: they ran the East India Trading Company that earned high taxes for the French monarchy. The present day harbour makes it difficult to believe that it was once a busy centre of trade with the distant Orient but the towns well preserved buildings indicate its former wealth and ferryboats travel to the village on the opposite side of the Lorient that still boasts a splendid array of huge warehouses.

Named after its creator, Gustave Eiffel, the Tour DEiffel has adorned the French capital of Paris for more than a century. It was erected in 1886 in record time and can be seen from almost every square and tiny lane in Paris. The eye is first drawn to its sturdy steel girders and weight - bearing transverse poles which are held in place by about 2. 5 million rivets, an amazing technical achievement of its time. > From the airy heights of the first viewing platform, there is a wonderful multi - directional panorama across Paris. On the higher viewing platforms the air is thinner but the views are increasingly spectacular. The Trocadero, Arc De Triomph, and Sacre Coeur, indeed, the whole of Paris are the distant earthbound stars of this visual experience which towers over one of the most most beautiful and charming citys in the world.

Unique cultural treasures and wonderful natural landscapes are to be found along the Kings Way in the heart of Jordan which is one of the most fascinating roads in the world. The historic road of kings leads to Madaba and is the oldest route to the Holy Land and to Mount Nebo that overlooks the Promised Land and into the colourful desert landscape of Wadi Rum to the Red Sea coast and a fascinating underwater world. The nineteenth century Sankt Georg Church in Madaba contains one of the most important treasures that dates back to Early Christian times. The fifteen metre long and five metre wide mosaic that depicts a map of Madaba was created in the sixth century A. D. and once consisted of more than two million square stones. Mount Nebo is one of the most holy places in Jordan and according to legend it was from there that Moses first saw the Promised Land.

North of Burmas central plains is the exotic and fascinating Shan State, a beautiful landscape in South East Asia located on the eastern side of Myanmar. Once forty Shan monarchs ruled there but they lived in hostile times as Burmese kings and Chinese warlords fought against them to gain control of their fertile land. We begin our journey at Inlay Lake. The magical beauty of this body of water has attracted and fascinated people since time immemorial and this unique lake is home to the Intha people. The next leg of the journey leads to a far more tranquil section of the lake that features floating gardens that are around a hundred metres long and two metres wide and consist of a densely interwoven carpet of water hyancinths. Mandalay, The City Of Art, is located in the centre of Shan State. It was founded in 1857 and up until the British conquered it in 1885 it was the capital of the kingdom of Burma.

Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africas tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the citys narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africas most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the citys past surface mining that gave rise to the countrys massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as that of the history of Africas native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. Gold Reef City is a large historical theme park that features the Johannesburg of pioneering times and focuses on the clothing, houses and entertainments of the countrys golden years.

The Strada Delle Dolomiti is a good mountain road that travels through a picturesque nature reserve amidst some of the most beautiful mountains in Europe, an enchanting region in northern Italy, the Alto Adige. The age-old charm of the historical city centre of Cortina dAmpezzo is captivating and the facades of its chalets and hotels are richly decorated with frescos.
