Melina Markowitz, messenger for the underworld, delivers the goods for the supernatural beings in our midst, no questions asked. Its more than a job; its a mission. Safety be damned. Melinas missing friend, Paul, could just be taking a little werewolf me time, but her investigation yields something more sinister. Suspicions first fall on Pauls wolf-pack rival. But that wouldnt explain the sudden windstorms rattling Melinas nerves or the ominous, shrieking crows that keep appearing. The clues lead Melina to a mermaid, a damaged and possibly deranged police officer and patterns for Norwegian doilies and finally bringing her to the realization that she may be dealing with the most powerful enemy she has ever faced.

The dead of night... The town of Lily, Arizona, has its share of Old West history and mystery. Its also home to the Gilded Lily, a former theater...and bawdy house. These days, it offers theatrical productions geared to tourists, but the recent discovery of a skull, a real skull, among the props and costumes has shaken everyone up. So, who do you call? The Krewe of Hunters, a special FBI unit of paranormal investigators. In this case, its agent Jane Everett. Janes also a talented artist who creates images of the dead as they once were. But the Krewe always works with local law enforcement, and here that means Sloan Trent, ex-Houston cop and now sheriff. He has connections that go deep within this small town. His great-great--grandmother was an actress at the Gilded Lily...as well as a Confederate spy. Shes not resting in peace and she lets him know it! Then more remains appear in the nearby desert. As they search for answers, using all the skills at their disposal, Jane and Sloan find themselves falling into danger--and into love.

Washed away : how the Great Flood of 1913, Americas most widespread natural disaster, terrorized a nation and changed it forever

In this book the author tells the story of a flood of near biblical proportions; its destruction, its heroes and victims, and how it shaped Americas natural disaster policies for the next century. Fourteen states in all were hit, along with every major and minor river east of the Mississippi. The storm began March 23, 1913, with a series of tornadoes that killed 150 people and injured 400. Then the freezing rains started and the flooding began. It continued for days. Some people drowned in their attics, others on the roads when the tried to flee. It was the nations most widespread flood ever, more than 700 people died, hundreds of thousands of homes and buildings were destroyed, and millions were left homeless. The destruction extended far beyond the Ohio valley to Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, New York, New Jersey, and Vermont. In the aftermath, flaws in Americas natural disaster response systems were exposed, echoing todays outrage over Hurricane Katrina. People demanded change. Laws were passed, and dams were built. Teams of experts vowed to develop flood control techniques for the region and stop flooding for good. So far those efforts have succeeded. It is estimated that in the Miami (Ohio) Valley alone, nearly 2,000 floods have been prevented, and the same methods have been used as a model for flood control nationwide and around the world.

A musician conjures stones to rise in the air and teaches his art to a mute child. Master Poisoner, Ghoroob of Mashad, has so perfected his craft that it is considered an honor to die from his meals. These are stories of magic and wonder in which ordinary people endure astonishing extremes in a world of bloodshed and brotherhood, miracles and catastrophes. With lyrical wit and profound simplicity, this reveals an Afghanistan of greater richness and humanity than is conveyed in newspaper headlines; an Afghanistan not of failure and despair, but of resilience and fulfillment. --
