Drawing on works from photojournalism, advertising, and contemporary art, Beautiful Suffering features reproductions of all the pieces in the Williams College Museum of Art exhibition of the same name. These images include portrayals of Abu Ghraib prisoners, refugees, and casualties of war, as well as damaged landscapes, assorted forms of self-portraiture, and even suffering that has been digitally fabricated or staged in the artists studio. This diverse collection is framed by five critical essays that engage the works themselves as well as the larger questions the exhibition confronted.--BOOK JACKET.

Renowned ceramist Adelaide Alsop Robineau (1869-1929) is considered one of the greatest ceramic artists of the twentieth century. Principally known for her porcelain Arts and Crafts Era pieces, Robineau was a pioneering artist and educator. Only an Artist offers a look at Robineaus art with a special focus on her later artwork, pieces that reveal an innovative ceramic design that does not become common until twenty years after her death. Only an Artist guest curator and essayist Thomas Piche Jr. has brought to light the seldom discussed last decade of Robineaus life. Prominent Art Pottery scholar Ellen Paul Denker offers an analysis of the artists influence and legacy, while exploring her role as an educator. Dr. Elizabeth Fowler, a professor at Syracuse University, places Robineau and her work among historic ceramics and the international art movements of early twentieth-century design.--BOOK JACKET.

Anxious objects : Willie Coles favorite brands
            by Sims, Patterson.

This publication accompanies the first survey of Willie Coles work from the late 1980s to the present. Cole was born and raised in New Jersey and has resided in the state his entire life. The exhibition and catalogue focus on Coles mixed media sculptural works made from salvaged irons, blow dryers, ironing boards, high-heeled shoes, lawn jockeys, and bicycle parts; paintings and drawings made of iron scorch marks, and prints. Coles consumer and domestic objects assume the appearance of objects from another time, culture, or place, transformed into powerful cultural and spiritual evocations referencing African and global culture. His art is solidly based in studious appreciation rather than humorous imitation or ironic appropriation. The exhibition was organized by Patterson Sims. In this catalogue, Sims offers a broad introduction to Cole and detailed descriptions of the works included in the show. The text traces Coles thinking, process, and evolution and the influence of his life-long residency in New Jersey. This catalogue also includes an insightful interview between the artist and Leslie King-Hammond, Dean of Graduate Studies, Maryland Institute College of Art; a short essay by Lowery Stokes Sims, President of the Studio Museum in Harlem, related to Coles pivotal 1988-89 artist residency there; and an extensive chronology and professional history of the artist.--BOOK JACKET.
