Each year, Phoenix Public Library staff recommend their "top holiday reads, music and movies" that would make great gifts.
Check out the following books for the holidays:
1.	For young children, "There Was an Old Monster!" by Rebecca Emberley offers a retelling of the classic "There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly." Children love to sing along and roar as Lion finally gets the better of Monster.

2.	"The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days" by Jeff Kinney is the fourth in this popular and funny series written for third through fifth graders. Parents will find themselves chuckling along.

3.	Written for pre-teen girls, "Kiss My Math: Showing Pre-Algebra Who's Boss" by Danica McKellar teaches important mathematic concepts in a manner that helps youngsters understand how the principles can be used in everyday life.

4.	"Bayou" by Jeremy Love is a graphic novel that combines fantasy, history and African American lore into one terrific story. This book is highly recommended for teens.

5.	"The Marriage Bureau for Rich People" by Farahad Zama features Mr. Ali who, bored with retirement, starts an arranged marriage bureau that becomes unexpectedly successful.

6.	Sure to appeal to readers of Alexander McCall Smith's "Botswana" stories is "Baking Cakes in Kigali" by Gaile Parkin. Set in modern-day Rwanda, the story features Angel who, in a country suffering from strife and turmoil, shares her hard-won wisdom as well as her delicious cakes.

Check out the following music or movies for the holidays:
7.	Get a little bit of summer this winter when you listen of the soundtrack to the motion picture "(500) Days of Summer." This CD has a terrific set of songs that listeners of all ages will like.

8. "What a night!" is a fun, enjoyable CD of Christmas music by Harry Connick, Jr.

Two classic films were released on DVD this year:

9.	"Hobson's Choice" directed by David Lean stars Charles Laughton, John Mills and Brenda De Banzie. This enjoyable movie is about a Victorian spinster who decides to take charge of her life and marry the man she loves despite objections from her father and the groom.

10.	In "Enchanted April," two respectable 1920s English women decide to find sunshine and happiness by renting an Italian villa for the month of April. They discover magic and love during their search. A superb chick-flick with an outstanding cast.

Get Ready for the Big "Cool Down" with Phoenix Public Library's Recommended Reads

Autumn is just around the corner and the days of vacations and "beach reads" will soon be a pleasant memory.
Kathleen Sullivan, Phoenix Public Library's collection development coordinator, recommends checking out the following books for the big "cool down:"
1.	Busy, frugal cooks will want to consult Ellen Brown's "$3 Meals in Minutes: Delicious, Low-Cost Dishes for Your Family That Can Be Prepared in No Time!"

2.	Sharon Bowers offers a wonderful inspiration for Halloween parties in "Ghoulish Goodies: Monster Eyeballs, Fudge Fingers, Spidery Cupcakes, and other Frightful Treats."

3.	For those who love crafts and live to give personal homemade gifts, Robert Dancik's "Amulets and Talismans" offers simple techniques for creating unique jewelry.

4. "Handmade Home: Simple Ways to Repurpose Old Materials into New Family Treasures" by Amanda Blake Soule shows how to make gifts that are "green."

5.	To wrap your handmade gifts, consider the advice in "Wrapagami: The Art of Fabric Gift Wraps" by Jennifer Playford. Be environmentally friendly by using colorful natural fabrics to create stylish presents.

6.	For those who don't like preparing (or giving) gifts "Scroogenomics: Why You Shouldn't Buy Presents for the Holidays" by Joel Waldfogel offers a serious argument about why gift giving just doesn't make fiscal sense!

7.	Rather than stay at home, during the "cool down" Arizonians can begin to enjoy the outdoors again. Charles Liu offers hikes in and near Phoenix in his book "60 Hikes within 60 Miles."

8.	Scott S. Warren offers "100 Classic Hikes in Arizona" including the Grand Canyon, Sedona and the Mogollon Rim.

9.	For those of us who prefer good fiction, consider Charlaine Harris' "Grave Sight" (the first book in the "Harper Connelly" series). In this mystery, Harris, the creator of the vampire series that has come to television as "True Blood," presents readers with another fascinating heroine. Harper Connelly, surviving being struck by lightning, finds she can locate the dead and relive their final moments.

10.	"Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" by Patrick Sskind is a story about identity, communication and the morality of the human spirit. "Perfume" explores what happens to a man devoid of his own scent and the emotional meaning that scents may carry.

Phoenix Public Library Hosts Two Artist Exhibits July 1 - Aug. 30

Burton Barr Central Library will host two artist exhibits, "Alphabet Ruins" by Rachel Wilson and "Code Loves You" by Angela Cazel Jahn, July 1 - Aug. 30 at the library's @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave.
Free artist receptions, hosted by the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library, will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. during First Friday art walk on July 3 and Aug. 7.
The artists were selected to exhibit together because of their complementary use of text and symbols. Wilson's mixed media monotypes deal with the theme of passing time and civilizations, expressed through alphabet fragments and cultural symbols. Cazel Jahn uses found objects, bits of text and computer code to create mixed media collages which explore the role of modern technology.
Wilson graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology. She currently resides in Flagstaff, Ariz. where she teaches printmaking and mixed media workshops for children, teens and adults.
Cazel Jahn is a Phoenix native and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University. She co-founded the Children's Museum of Phoenix and served as artistic director from 1998 to 2007.

Phoenix Public Library Recommends 10 Hot Summer Reads for Adults

Summer is just around the corner and now is the perfect time to put together your beach reads list. Phoenix Public Library's top 10 summer reads include fabulous fiction and non-fiction recommendations.
Kathleen Sullivan, Phoenix Public Library's collection development coordinator, recommends checking out the following fiction:
1.	In "Starvation Lake," mystery writer Bryan Gruley uses his insider knowledge about amateur hockey with a great sense of place (the wilds of upper Michigan) to create a memorable thriller.

2.	Dana Stabenow brings back her Alaskan detective Kate Shugak and a rich community of characters in her newest mystery "Whisper to the Blood."

3.	Christopher Buckley, in "Supreme Courtship," uses political satire to tell the tale of a U.S. president who names a reality-show TV judge to the Supreme Court.

4.	In 'Fool," Christopher Moore features King Lear's jester and other literary characters, as they attempt to restore order to the kingdom. This book will delight fans of Moore's off-beat humor.

5.	For those who love wacky families, "Revenge of the Spellmans" by Lisa Lutz is a true treat. Three siblings who work in a private detective firm are all facing unique challenges and handling them in their own, very funny, dysfunctional ways.

6.	Christina Skye's "Code Name" series is a highly recommended romance series. They offer hunky Navy SEALS, dogs, knitting, sex, intrigue and humor. First book in the series is "Code Name: Nanny."

7.	Three friends sell their suburban homes and purchase a home in the country in "A Year on Ladybug Farm" by Donna Ball. The challenges they face teach them a lot about community, friendship and independence.

8.	In "The Sugar Queen" by Sarah Addison Allen, Josey Cirrini wakes up one morning to find the local "fallen woman" taking refuge in her bedroom closet. That is only the beginning of the magical happenings that will change Josey's life forever.

For nonfiction lovers, Kathleen recommends:
9.	Helene Cooper in her memoir of her privileged childhood in Liberia, "The House at Sugar Beach," offers incredible insight into this African country's history and how it influenced her life.

10.	An out-of-work writer decides that perhaps there is something he can learn by understanding the public fascination with Tiger Woods. In Bob Smiley's "Follow the Roar: Tailing Tiger for all 604 Holes of his Most Spectacular Season," the reader joins in this unique quest.

The new Phoenix Public Library card will be available free to all new customers. Current library cards may be exchanged for a new card free of charge until Feb. 28. Thereafter, a $2 replacement fee will be charged. No replacement cards for current cardholders are available Jan. 21 - 28 due to a system upgrade.
