Burton Barr Central Library will host an exhibit of photographs by Betsy BretHarte and Mary Kay Zeeb, titled "WORD," Jan. 26 - March 26 at the library's @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave.
BretHarte and Zeeb began this collaborative project in 2009 by photographing family and friends, each verbally spelling the word "love," one letter at a time, four frames per person. As the project unfolded, their community of "spellers" grew, involving surprise guests, people on the streets of downtown Phoenix, and strands of neighbors at yard sales they happened upon while bike riding. The ongoing series now includes more than 200 photographs, 156 of which will be on display. (Click here for high resolution images.)

Phoenix Public Library Recommends Stocking Stuffers

Searching for that perfect gift or looking for an inspirational read to get you through this busy season? Phoenix Public Library staff offers the following recommendations - small books that make a big impact.

If the commercialism and hype of today's Christmas get you down, take a moment to read "A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote. Without a hint of saccharine sentimentality, Capote evokes a time when Christmas didn't mean "stuff."

For more than 20 years, business professionals have counted "The One Minute Manager" by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson as a must-read. This little book demonstrates how one-minute goals can help managers succeed.

Sun Tracks is a publishing program of the University of Arizona. "Secrets from the Center of the World" by Joy Harjo with photographs by Stephen E. Strom is a synthesis of photography and poetry that celebrates the beauty and spirit of the Navajo lands.

In "The Power of Small: Why Little Things Make All the Difference," business leaders Linda Thaler and Robin Koval advocate "going the extra inch" to make a difference in one's life and career. Sweat the small stuff, they recommend, and you'll realize big rewards.

"The Uncommon Reader," Alan Bennett's funny and insightful story of the Queen of England going AWOL in a library van, demonstrates how reading can open your world and your heart.

Antoine de Saint-Exupry's "The Little Prince" is the story of a little prince from a small planet who relates his adventures in seeking the secret of what is important in life. There are so many pearls in this small volume, including this: "One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye."

"The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros is a beautifully written coming-of-age story as told by Esperanza Cordero, a young girl growing up in a Latino community in Chicago. Esperanza wants to leave her neighborhood and its oppressive environment and determine for herself who she will be.

In "Gift from the Sea," share Anne Morrow Lindbergh's walks on the beach and her luminous thoughts on the human condition, such as this: "The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choice less as a beach - waiting for a gift from the sea."

Burton Barr Central Library will host an exhibit by Tony DiRienzi and Suzanne Chudnoff, titled "Recollections and Variations," Nov. 9 - Jan. 19 at the library's @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave.
In his mixed media collages, DiRienzi layers fabric remnants, paper, acrylic resins and oil paint glazes to create multi-layered compositions reminiscent of geologic strata. He holds a Master of Arts degree from Goddard College.
Working with welded metal and fused glass, Chudnoff creates brightly colored sculptural pieces. Her fluid, organic compositions are balanced by formal structure. She holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Oregon, Eugene.
The artists were selected to exhibit together because of their complementary use of abstract shape and visual texture. (Click here for high resolution images.)

In anticipation of Arizona's centennial in February 2012, this year's exhibit is evocative of the ways generations of Arizonans have honored the memories of their loved ones in their hearts and in public spaces. Traditional Da de los Muertos altars range from simple to elaborate displays. They typically include photos of the deceased, candles, flowers, incense, fruit, bread and things the deceased person enjoyed in life, including favorite food and beverages.
The altars on exhibit range from remembrances of loved ones to a celebration of people connected to the history of the Grand Canyon and the Hohokom.
Kathleen Araiza's altar reflects the memory of "Mi Abuelo," her grandfather, farmer and copper miner Richard Ramirez. His life is remembered with toys and schoolbooks, papier-mch farm animals, copper-plated tools, a skeletal family and his favorite root beer and butterscotch candy.
Erica Lucci and Chris Altman's "Grand Memories" altar includes an abstract representation of the Grand Canyon and pictures of the people important to the history of the Grand Canyon along with items that evoke their memories - a boat, maps and food for John Wesley Powell, for example.

Artist Ann-Marie Read created an altar designed to look like the work table of a museum curator who is working on the creation of museum displays about the Hohokom people and the petroglyphs and artifacts they left behind.

South Mountain Community Library Grand Opening Sept. 24

South Mountain Community Library, a first-ever shared operation by Phoenix Public Library and South Mountain Community College, will celebrate its grand opening Sept. 24.
City Librarian Toni Garvey and South Mountain Community College President Dr. Shari Olson will officially open the building, at 7050 S. 24th St., with a ribbon-cutting at 9 a.m. The ceremony will be followed by music and free activities for the whole family.
The new 50,000-square-foot facility features a children's story room, large community meeting room, teen space, WiFi, study rooms, 117 public computers with Internet access, patio spaces and a new collection of DVDs, CDs, newspapers and magazines.
The library, designed by richrd + bauer, llc. and built by Haydon Building Corporation, is funded through the 2006 Citizens Bond Program and the 2004 Maricopa County Community College District Bond Program.
The building is modeled after an integrated circuit, promoting easy access and connections between library units. Light shafts bring natural light to the interior, which is lined in cedar. Laser-cut acrylic panels reflect the area's agricultural history. The building's exterior is clad in copper, which will weather over time.
A multi-faceted public artwork is being installed. "Passage" by Mags Harries & Lajos Hder begins with steel letters embedded in concrete in the plaza in front of the library and continues to a shaded pathway that connects the library to the proposed Western Canal Bridge, providing a pedestrian link to the Legacy Village Shopping Center. Speakers set in artistic acoustic chairs in the plaza will play recordings of poetry curated by Arizona poet Alberto Ros that reflect South Phoenix and the local landscape. Four trellises spanning the path between the library and canal feature cut-out letters that cast poems in shadows along the path. The public art project is funded by city of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture Percent for Art program and the Maricopa County Community College District Bond Program.
South Mountain Community College is one of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges.

In this series of photographs, Colville explores the marks left on the earth by natural events as well as human activity. The images are a selection from a growing body of work that uses the transformative power of photography to speak to our fears of life, death and regeneration. (Click here for high resolution images.)

Photographs and/or sketches may be included. Altars must be freestanding and no larger than 3 feet by 4 feet by 812 feet.

It's summer and time to enjoy a book by the pool. If you've read the latest Sookie Stackhouse and can't wait for the next David Baldacci or Janet Evanovich, Phoenix Public Library's Kathleen Sullivan has recommendations for your summer reading pleasure.

"Never-ending Snake: An Ellah Clah Novel" by Aime and David Thurlo - Like Hillerman's Jim Chee, Thurlo's Navajo cop, Ella Clah, solves crimes on the reservation.

C.J. Box's "Three Weeks to Say Goodbye" will keep you engaged while you wait for the next Nevada Barr mystery. Share these adventures about a Wyoming game warden.

"Village of the Ghost Bears" by Stan Jones - a good Alaska mystery "fix" for Dana Stabenow fans.

Like John Sandford's novels, Thomas Perry's "Blood Money" features well-rounded characters - both "good" and "bad" guys.

"Dead Zero: A Bob Lee Swagger Novel" by Stephen Hunter - If you're out of W.E.B. Griffin novels, you'll enjoy Hunter's fast-paced, suspenseful and gritty books.

Trying to bridge the gap between Robin Cook books, read "Ice Cold: A Rizzoli and Isles Novel" by Tess Gerritsen - a wonderful medical thriller.

"Sworn to Silence" by Linda Castillo follows the adventures of an Amish police chief and will keep you enthralled while you wait for Julie Garwood's next romantic suspense story.

Between Harry Turtledove tomes? Visit the alternative universe of Eric Flint's "1635: The Eastern Front."

Like Barbara Delinsky, Kristin Hannah's "True Colors" is about contemporary women and their relationships.

"Last Sacrifice" by Richelle Read is something to enjoy while you wait for Stephenie Meyer's next tale.

Three Phoenix Public Library Branches Named New Landmark Libraries

Library Journal has named three Phoenix Public Library branches New Landmark Libraries: Palo Verde Library (4402 N. 51st Ave.), Cesar Chavez Library (3635 W. Baseline Rd.) and Agave Library (23550 N. 36th Ave.).
According to the online version of Library Journal, the New Landmark Libraries "raise the bar as they respond to trends in green design and shifts in service models." From a national pool of nominations, a panel of 16 judges chose ten New Landmark Libraries and ten Honorable Mentions. Phoenix Public Library is the only library system in the nation to have three facilities named.
Nominees were evaluated on overall design and construction excellence, response to community context and constraints, sustainability, functionality, innovation, and beauty and delight. Judges focused on libraries built or renovated in the last six years.
Founded in 1876, by Melvil Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey decimal system, Library Journal is a trade publication for librarians. It reports news about the library world, covering technology, management, policy, and other professional concerns, as well as offering numerous book reviews each month.

Phoenix Public Library Celebrates "A Day in the Life of Phoenix Public Library"

How do libraries contribute to the community? On April 14, librarians and the public will count the ways, during "A Day in the Life of Phoenix Public Library."
For one day, 15 branch libraries and Burton Barr Central Library will take a snapshot of a typical library day, counting every visitor - in person and online - as well as events, workshops and programs for teens, children and adults. They'll also compile customer comments, photographs and other data chronicling a typical library day.
"We believe this 'snapshot' will demonstrate the unique and irreplaceable services we offer and life-changing experiences we foster that our communities depend on, especially during these times of economic challenge," said City Librarian Toni Garvey.

Burton Barr Central Library will host an exhibit by Kris Sanford and Beata Wehr, titled "Cover to Cover," March 23 - May 31 at the library's @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave.
The artists were selected to exhibit together because of their complementary use of the book form to explore memories. (Click here for high resolution images.)
In her series of photographs, Sanford uses a 1954 diary that belonged to a grandfather she never met as a way to explore memories contained in the text. For Sanford, photographs and diaries stand in as tangible objects that represent the fleeting experience of friendship, family and relationships.
A native of Warsaw, Poland, Wehr uses timelines, letters from the past and calendars to create artist's books that explore the passage of time and its consequences for fragile bodies and minds. She explores the dialectic of how the past determines the present and how what is happening now influences thinking about the past.

Phoenix Public Library Resources to Help Your Child Read

Phoenix Public Library offers free resources to help parents ensure their children succeed in school and read on grade level. Here are five ways you can help your child:

1.	FREE READING SCREENINGS. Take 30 minutes on a Saturday morning to have your child screened to determine her reading level and to test for reading problems. Staff will suggest learning activities and provide materials to help improve your child's reading, and will offer referral information to parents whose children are not reading on grade level. Screenings are offered at four different library locations on a rotating basis each month. For a complete schedule, visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org.

2.	FREE READING PROGRAMS. The library offers annual summer and winter reading programs to encourage children to read for the fun of it and develop their skills. The Library's summer reading programs for children and teens start May 31 and run through July 30, offering incentives for reading and encouraging families to read throughout the summer.

3.	STEP INTO READING GUIDES. Parent guides are available in English and Spanish at library locations to help you select books at a reading level appropriate for your child. Pick a topic your child loves and enjoy the book together.

4.	FREE STORYTIMES. Storytimes are offered throughout the library system for children up to five years of age. The staff also shares techniques and strategies with parents to help build a child's foundation for reading.

5.	ONLINE RESOURCES. The library's website, phoenixpubliclibrary.org, is your gateway to a wealth of materials for you and your child - from animated books in the Tumble Book Library to databases for help with homework

Free Vision Screenings for Children at Four Phoenix Public Library Locations April 14 & 15

Phoenix Public Library will host vision screenings for children, ages 5 to 16, at four library locations:

Palo Verde Library, 4402 N. 51st Ave.
1 - 3 p.m., Thursday, April 14

Harmon Library, 1325 S. 5th Ave.
4 - 6 p.m., Thursday, April 14

Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave.
Noon - 2 p.m., Friday, April 15

Acacia Library, 750 E. Townley
3 - 5 p.m., Friday, April 15

Registration is not required, but space is limited. Screenings are free with a library card.
Children who require additional vision care will receive a voucher for a free comprehensive eye examination and eyewear (if needed) at any EyeMasters location.
The program is provided by Davis Vision's Focus on America - an outreach initiative to offer vision screenings free of charge to children. Undiagnosed vision problems can slow children's development, particularly their ability to learn to read, preventing them from keeping up with their classmates academically and socially.
Library cards are free to Maricopa County residents and may be obtained at any library location. Customers may also pre-register for a library card online.

October is Teen Read Month at Phoenix Public Library. To celebrate, the library will host special activities for teens, ages 12 -18, including a Q & A and booksigning with Lisa McMann, author of "Wake," "Fade" and "Gone." Teens will also be able to explore what their dreams mean with dream interpreter Tristan Jade. McMann and Jade will appear:
          Tuesday, Oct. 19, 5 - 6:30 p.m., at Cesar Chavez Library (3635 W. Baseline Rd.)
          Saturday, Oct. 23, 2 - 3:30 p.m., at Burton Barr Central Library (1221 N. Central Ave.)
          Saturday, Oct. 23, 5 - 6:30 p.m., at Mesquite Library (4525 Paradise Village Parkway N.)

Other free programs include workshops where teens can make a dreamcatcher, learn monster make-up techniques, create and mix music, silk screen a t-shirt and more. The GameTruck Mobile Video Game TheaterTM is also scheduled to visit six library locations.
By attending a free program or writing a book review, teens can reduce their library overdue fees by $5 (up to $50) and enter a drawing to win a $50 iTunes or Bookmans Entertainment Exchange gift card. Prize drawings will be held at each library location at the end of the month.
Teens are also invited to vote online for their favorite book. Winners will be featured on a library bookmark in November. To vote or for a complete list of Teen Read Month events, visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org/teens..
