Daniel Hernandez Jr. and Deadliest Catch's Josh Harris Visit Phoenix Public Library in May

Burton Barr Central Library, located at 1221 N. Central Ave., will host two free author programs in May.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, Daniel Hernandez Jr. talks about his memoir, "They Call Me a Hero." Hernandez was an intern for U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. On January 8, 2011 when Giffords was shot during a "Congress on Your Corner" event, Hernandez's quick thinking helped save her life. Written for young readers, his memoir explores his life and what it takes to rise above adversity and become a hero. The program is hosted by the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, Josh Harris, a fisherman on The Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," will discuss the biography he has written about his father, "Captain Phil Harris." The elder Harris suffered a massive stroke in January 2010 and died shortly thereafter. The program is supported by The Poisoned Pen.

Books will be available for purchase at both events. Authors will be available to autograph books at the conclusion of each program.

Phoenix Public Library Exhibits "Sticky Situations" March 28 - May 30

Burton Barr Central Library will host an exhibition of work by Beth Jorgensen and Alejandra Orozco, titled "Sticky Situations," March 28 - May 30 at the library's @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave. A First Friday artist reception will be held 6 - 8 p.m. on Friday, April 5.

Jorgensen's work explores the interactions that result when people, who do not know each other, are thrown together on an elevator. These often ironic, humorous or awkward scenarios reveal much about the way different personalities interact.

Orozco's themes center on control, desire and obsession, and in the interaction of the human figure with various pastries, candies and desserts. Her work illuminates issues surrounding the choices we make. (Click here for high resolution images.)

Jorgensen is a mixed media artist, who specializes in oil painting. Originally from a small town in Virginia, she moved to Tempe to attend Collins College. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University.

Born in Morelia, Michoacn, Mexico, Orozco lived in California for 20 years before moving to Tucson to attend the Southwest University of Visual Arts. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art.

Unplug with Phoenix Public Library March 1 - 2

Phoenix Public Library invites you to take the pledge to participate in the National Day of Unplugging - from sundown on March 1 to sundown on March 2. Unplug from all forms of electronic media and connect with friends, family and the community for one day.

Need some ideas on what to do with all that time free from your electronic devices? Here are the library's top five picks:

1.	Explore one of our 17 library locations with the kids. For younger children, we offer First Five Years spaces. Designed to amaze and amuse, these spaces support early literacy through the development of motor skills and healthy brain function. For older children, we offer a rich selection of books by favorite authors and nonfiction books on topics ranging from spiders and snakes to the solar system. Read one together.

2.	Visit a museum or cultural institution in our community. With a Culture Pass, you and a friend can visit one of 12 museums including the Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix Zoo, Arizona Science Center, Pueblo Grande Museum, Children's Museum of Phoenix and the Desert Botanical Garden. Plan ahead and check Culture Pass availability on phoenixpubliclibrary.org before you unplug.

3.	Tour Burton Barr Central Library, 1221 N. Central Ave., and learn about its amazing architecture and fabulous art collection. The library offers free tours every Saturday at 11 a.m. Can you find the eyes gazing out at you from "Frank's Fantasy Forest" by Ray Fink? What geological formation inspired architect Will Bruder's design?

4.	Listen to poetry at South Mountain Community Library, 7050 S. 24th St. Speakers set in acoustic chairs in the plaza adjacent to the library play recordings of poetry curated by Arizona poet Alberto Rios. Among the poems is "Baseline Blooms," a collaborative community poem compiled by Rios and featuring the contributions of more than 30 community members of all ages.

5.	Read a book, magazine or newspaper. Yes, the library still offers the kind printed on paper. Discover a new author, find an interesting recipe in a culinary magazine to make later, or catch up on all the news from Kingman, San Diego or Wall Street.

The National Day of Unplugging is a 24-hour period, beginning at sunset on the first Friday in March and offering an opportunity to unwind, unplug, relax, reflect, get outdoors, and connect with loved ones.
Phoenix Public Library Expands Successful NOOK Pilot Project

Phoenix Public Library is expanding its successful Project NOOK to all library locations on Feb. 11, 2013.
Library customers may check out a NOOK for free using a valid library card for a loan period of 21 days. Customers may download materials from the more than 90,000 e-books and e-audiobooks available through the library's website, or from the Barnes and Noble website (through the customer's personal account). At the end of the loan period, the customer returns the NOOK to the location from which they borrowed it.
"I'm glad to see the library make this technology accessible to all members of our community. Reading is the most crucial skill for children and adults. While the way we read changes, the importance of reading does not," commented Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton.
Since October 2011, library customers have borrowed NOOK e-readers more than 2,500 times, with 77 percent of customers reporting satisfaction with their experience. The pilot project provided e-readers for loan to library customers at seven locations: Cesar Chavez, Harmon, Palo Verde, Saguaro, Juniper, Acacia and Burton Barr Central Libraries.
The acquisition of 200 NOOK e-readers for the pilot project was funded with a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records.

"We Read" Kicks Off Jan. 14 at Phoenix Public Library

Phoenix Public Library's annual family winter reading program, "We Read @ Phoenix Public Library," kicks off Monday, Jan. 14 and runs through Saturday, March 2 at all library locations.
Children up to 12 years old are eligible to participate in the program and earn prizes by reading or listening to books. Every child who completes the program will receive a "We Read" t-shirt. The program is designed to encourage families to read together.
Two new features of the program this year are "The Great Stuffed Animal Sleepover" and program-end tie-dye parties. For "The Great Stuffed Animal Sleepover," children are invited to visit the library for a special evening storytime and drop off their favorite stuffed animal. The treasured toys will stay in the care of librarians overnight - with a full report to their owners the next day of all the activities that took place. "The Great Stuffed Animal Sleepover" takes place at select library locations in January and February.
Select library locations will also celebrate the end of the program in March with a program during which children can tie-dye their "We Read" t-shirts. For additional information, call 602-262-4636 or visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org.

Phoenix Public Library Recommends Kids' and Teen Reads for the Rest of Us.

Searching for that perfect gift or looking for a great read to get you through this busy season? Phoenix Public Library's Collection Development Manager Kathleen Sullivan offers these recommendations from children's and young adult literature - why should the kids have all the fun?

"Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes" by Eric Litwin. Pete's got some lovely white shoes, but they don't stay that way long as he encounters strawberries, blueberries and mud in this picture book.

Beautifully illustrated, "Zen Shorts" by Jon Muth is the tale of three children who befriend a giant panda. During a series of visits with the children, the panda shares Zen fables to delight and enlighten.

For handbag aficionados, Kevin Henkes' "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" is a girl-gets-purse, girl-loses-purse, girl-gets-purse-back love story. Caldecott nominee Henkes renders the tale in watercolor-and-ink illustrations, vignettes and panels.

Adult readers may be familiar with Carl Hiaasen's very adult noir-tinged mysteries. Originally written for a younger audience, "Hoot" has much to offer adult Hiaasen fans - humor, quirky characters and a South Florida environmental theme.

Royden Lepp's "Rust - Visitor in the Field" is the tale of a mysterious boy who helps a teen keep his family farm afloat in a post-war future. The novel is in graphic format.

"Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Mystery" by Deborah Howe is a talking-dog's story of a vampire rabbit. Found in a shoebox in a movie theater when a college English professor and his family go to see "Dracula," Bunnicula turns tomatoes, lettuce, even zucchini - white. You guessed it - he's sucking their juices out.

The first in a four-part Lunar Chronicles series, "Cinder" by Marissa Meyer re-imagines the Cinderella story as a plague ravages an overcrowded earth. A cyborg, Cinder lives with a guardian stepmother and two stepsisters who force her to work as a mechanic. But she'll have to take time away from finding a cure for the plague to attend a ball and win a handsome prince.

John Green's "The Fault in Our Stars" is the story of two teen cancer survivors who fall in love. In this astounding novel, Green encourages his readers to ponder life, love and death with sensitivity, intelligence and integrity.

Told in spare, free verse poems, "Heartbeat" by Sharon Creech documents a year in the life of twelve-year-old Annie, when her mother becomes pregnant, her grandfather begins faltering and her best friend becomes distant.

For a complete list of Sullivan's recommendations, visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org.

Burton Barr Central Library Exhibits Da de los Muertos Altars Oct., 21 - Nov. 3

"Stories of Our Lives," an exhibit of artist-made altars inspired by Da de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), will be on display Oct. 21 to Nov. 3 in Burton Barr Central Library's @Central Gallery, located on the first floor at 1221 N. Central Ave.
This year's theme invites artists and visitors alike to remember and share the stories and people who have influenced our lives. Seven altars will be presented.
Kathleen Araiza and Ricky Araiza are creating an altar in honor of their great-grandmother, Petra Muoz. Widowed at the age of 30 with seven children to support, Petra hosted weekly poker games in her basement for locals to play, laugh and buy her homemade enchiladas.
"Three Dogs Life: Ofrenda de los Perros" is Anastacia Andrade's altar, memorializing the events of her life with her three dogs: Juaquin, Jake and Jackie.
Jenny Salazar O'Connell, with Claire Salazar Hansen and Andrietta Salazar Lee, are crafting an altar to remember their father's love of books and storytelling, and share his philosophy of peace.
The altar created by Ros Triumpho Sullivan and Marcela Uribe will reflect memories of their mothers through needlework and recipes. Visitors will be invited to share their own recipes and recollections on paper provided by the women.
The Friends of the Phoenix Public Library will host a public reception with the artists 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25.
Da de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated in Mexico on Nov. 1 and 2. It is a complex tradition that varies from region to region with roots in ancient Aztec religion. It is a festive occasion, set aside to honor, remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones.

South Mountain Community Library Honored by Valley Forward

On the same day community members gathered to celebrate the first anniversary of its grand opening, South Mountain Community Library was honored by Valley Forward and Salt River Project with three first-place Crescordia awards for environmental excellence.
The library, operated jointly by Phoenix Public Library and South Mountain Community College, won first place in the categories of Buildings and Structures, Civic; Buildings and Structures, Institutional; and Art in Public Places, for the multi-faceted public artwork "Passage" by Mags Haries, Lajos Hder and poet Alberto Rios at a ceremony held September 29.
"We are extremely proud of our beautiful library, and are thrilled to receive these honors," stated SMCC College President Dr. Shari Olson. "It is an incredible, life-changing asset and resource for our students, and our entire community."
"We are honored to be recognized for building signature facilities that exemplify the city's commitment to building a sustainable community," reported City Librarian Rita Hamilton.
The South Mountain Community Library was designed by the Phoenix architectural firm of richard+bauer, llc. The 50,000-square-foot facility was funded through the 2006 Citizens Bond Program and the 2004 Maricopa County Community College District Bond Program. The public art project was commissioned jointly by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture Public Art Program and the Maricopa County Community College District. (High resolution images of the library.)
Earlier that day, the South Mountain Community Library celebrated its one-year anniversary with the unveiling of "Baseline Blooms," a collaborative community poem compiled by renowned Arizona poet Alberto Rios. (PDF of "Baseline Blooms" bookmark.) The poem can now be heard on the artistic acoustic chairs in the plaza outside the library's west entrance - part of Harries and Hder's "Passage." In addition to the poetry, the public art project includes a new bridge across the Western Canal, improving pedestrian access to the library and college campus. (PDF of bookmark about the project.)
Valley Forward received more than 120 entries for what is Arizona's most prestigious awards competition, focusing exclusively on sustainability initiatives. The awards were presented at a gala reception attended by 600 community leaders at Scottsdale's Westin Kierland Resort.

"Nicole and I are looking forward to spending this time with the toddlers," explained Mayor Stanton. "We know how important it is for parents and caregivers to support the skills that will help their children learn to read. Programs like these are fun, but also provide valuable information on how to engage very young children and it's critical to start early."

"Sasha and I are excited to be partnering with Phoenix Public Library and children across the valley in bringing our story to life," explains author Rodney Glassman.
Glassman, PhD in arid land resource sciences and former Tucson city councilman, wrote the first-in-the-nation mandatory rainwater harvesting, gray water plumbing and solar-powered water heating ordinances. Sasha Glassman is an attorney and board member of the Madison Elementary School District Governing Board. Their first book, "Jeremy Jackrabbit Harvests the Rain," was illustrated by children in Tucson and distributed to every kindergarten student in Tucson Unified School District and other districts in Pima County.

South Mountain Community Library Celebrates First Anniversary Sept. 29

South Mountain Community Library, 7050 S. 24th St., will celebrate its first anniversary Sept. 29, 2012. Phoenix Vice Mayor Michael Johnson, City Librarian Rita Hamilton, Maricopa Community Colleges Governing Board Chair Doyle Burke and South Mountain Community College President Dr. Shari Olson will kick off the festivities with remarks at 10 a.m.
Arizona State University Regents' Professor Alberto Rios will read "Baseline Blooms," a collective poem about South Phoenix and Laveen. The poem was compiled and edited by Rios from words, lines, phrases, short memories and observations submitted by community members. More than 30 separate entries were received.
The poem has been recorded for the artistic acoustic chairs in the plaza adjacent to the library. Part of a multi-faceted public artwork by Mags Harries & Lajos Hder entitled "Passage," the chairs feature a selection of poetry curated by Rios that reflects South Phoenix and the local landscape. The artwork includes the chairs and steel letters embedded in concrete in the plaza in front of the library and continues to a shaded pathway that connects the library to the Western Canal Bridge, providing a pedestrian link to the Legacy Village Shopping Center.
A performance by the SMCC Jazz Ensemble and other activities for children and their families will continue through noon at the library.
The 50,000-square-foot facility was funded through the 2006 Citizens Bond Program and the 2004 Maricopa County Community College District Bond Program. Both the library and artwork are finalists for 2012 Valley Forward Environmental Excellence Awards.
South Mountain Community College is one of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges.

South Mountain Community Library (7050 S. 24th St.) is one of five academic libraries selected as New Landmark Libraries for 2012 by "Library Journal." The New Landmark Libraries project, introduced in 2011, identifies trendsetting library buildings across the country. In 2012, the journal solicited submissions for U.S. academic library projects completed between 2007 and 2011.
South Mountain Community Library is a joint venture by Maricopa Community College District and Phoenix Public Library, serving the students of South Mountain Community College and the public. According to the online version of "Library Journal," the library is "just plain gorgeous inside." One of six judges that selected the library states, it's a "jewel [that] ties beautifully to the context from inside out[and] seems to resonate with the environment it serves." (Click here for high resolution images.)
From a national pool of nominations, the panel of judges chose five New Landmark Libraries and two Honorable Mentions. The awards are based on overall design and construction excellence, response to community context and constraints, sustainability, functionality, innovation, beauty and delight, and more.
South Mountain Community Library was designed by phoenix-based richrd + bauer architecture, llc. Their team is also responsible for Desert Broom Library, Harmon Library and the interior design for Cesar Chavez Library in the Phoenix Public Library system.
The current honor follows on last year's recognition of three Phoenix Public Library facilities named New Landmark Libraries: Palo Verde Library (4402 N. 51st Ave.), Cesar Chavez Library (3635 W. Baseline Rd.) and Agave Library (23550 N. 36th Ave.).

Phoenix Public Library Recommends Barbeque for Breakfast

This summer, Phoenix Public Library takes a different spin on the same old beach reads list. Collection Development Coordinator Kathleen Sullivan recommends these books for your palate - fictional or otherwise.
<block quote>"Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home" by Jeni Britton Bauer - Home-made gourmet treats to cool you during the heat of summer. Try the goat cheese and roasted cherries!

Nicole Mones' "The Last Chinese Chef" is a literary and gastronomic delight. A food writer, struggling with grief, is sent on assignment to China to research a young American-born Jewish-Chinese chef.

In "The Kansas City Barbeque Society Cookbook," Ardie A. Davis provides a look at competitive barbeque and a great taste of summer.

"Aftertaste: A Novel in Five Courses" by Meredith Mileti - Co-owner with her husband of a successful Manhattan restaurant, Mirabella's world is shattered by her partner's infidelity. As she puts her life back together, you will be treated to mouth-watering descriptions of food and recipes.

Kaye Robin's "Breakfast in Bed" is a romantic bon bon. Becca is asked to teach a college professor how to be a "domestic god." All too soon, she has more on her mind than cooking lessons.

"The Book of Salt" by Monique T. D. Truong re-imagines the life of a Vietnamese cook who eventually worked for Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.

In Jessica Conant-Park's "Cook the Books," assistant to a cookbook writer Chloe finds it hard to believe a trained chef would die in a grease fire. Her investigation leads back to a former love.

"Hungry Girl: 200 under 200" - Lisa Lillien gives us tasty recipes under 200 calories.

Grilling's not just for meat in Karen Adler's "The Gardner and the Grill." Roasting or grilling adds unique flavor to fruits and vegetables too.

Sarah Addison Allen's "The Girl Who Chased the Moon" uses magical realism to explore a Southern town where barbeque is a religion and cakes lure loved ones home.</block quote>

Phoenix Public Library Exhibits "In Tune: Art + Music" March 29 - May 31

Burton Barr Central Library will host an exhibit of paintings by Anne Allemann, Jill Brownley and Jesa Townsend, titled "In Tune: Art + Music," March 29 - May 31 at the library's @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave.
For this group exhibition, the three artists took their inspiration from the world of music, each depicting the subject from their unique point of view. (Click here for high resolution images.)

Working in either oil or watercolor, Allemann paints contemporary musicians in an abstracted style and vivid color. Brownley's fondness for blues music is reflected in her folk art portraits of noted blues musicians such as Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. A classically trained musician, Townsend employs an impressionistic point of view and bold color combinations to create her distinctively styled oil paintings.

South Mountain Community Library Deadline for Collective Poem April 30

South Mountain Community Library invites community members of all ages to submit a few words, a line, phrase, "tweet," short memory or observation for the creation of a collective poem about South Mountain communities, including South Phoenix and Laveen.
Submissions must be delivered to the library at 7050 S. 24th St. by 9 p.m. Monday, April 30.
Edited by Alberto Alvaro Ros, the poem will be recorded as part of an art installation on the South Mountain Community College campus, connected to the library. Contributors, whose work is selected, will be permanently acknowledged in the recording, on a bookmark of the poem printed for the library's first anniversary in September and in signage in the library.
"What we will do is to write a poem together, finding a way of standing shoulder-to-shoulder in words, a way of connecting ourselves to ourselves and, by extension, to everyone who hears or reads the words that come out of this effort," Ros explained. Ros is a regents' professor at Arizona State University, where he has taught since 1982 and where he holds the further distinction of the Katharine C. Turner endowed chair in English.
The new 50,000-square-foot library is a joint project of Phoenix Public Library and South Mountain Community College. It opened to the public last fall.
A multi-faceted public artwork, "Passage" by Mags Harries & Lajos Hder, begins with steel letters embedded in concrete in the plaza in front of the library and continues to a shaded pathway that connects the library to the proposed Western Canal Bridge, providing a pedestrian link to the Legacy Village Shopping Center. Speakers set in acoustic chairs in the plaza playrecordings of poetry curated by Ros that reflect the community and local landscape. Four trellises spanning the path between the library and canal feature cut-out letters that cast poems in shadows along the path. The public art project is funded by city of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture Percent for Art program and the Maricopa County Community College District Bond Program.
South Mountain Community College is one of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges.

Phoenix Public Library Seeks Proposals for "Da de los Muertos" Exhibit

Burton Barr Central Library is seeking proposals for artist-made altars inspired by Da de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) for its @Central Gallery, located on the first floor at 1221 N. Central Ave. Proposals are being accepted from Arizona residents, 18 years or older. Deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. The exhibit will run Oct. 24 - Nov. 5.
In anticipation of Arizona's centennial in February 2012, this year's exhibit is titled, "Adorned in Memories, Written in Stone." The title is evocative of the ways generations of Arizonans have honored the memories of their loved ones in their hearts and in public spaces.
In keeping with the theme, artists are asked to reflect upon their subject's place in the mosaic that is Arizona history and submit a brief written description (200 words or less) of their proposed altar. Photographs and/or sketches may be included. Altars must be freestanding and no larger than 3 feet by 4 feet by 812 feet.
While non-traditional altars will be considered, all altars submitted should reflect the theme and traditions of Da de los Muertos. Artists should be ready to install their altar on Saturday, Oct. 22. The submission fee is $5.
For complete submission instructions, visit phoenixpubliclibrary.org or send an e-mail to centralgallery.lib@phoenix.gov.
