​Library Cards

Can I get a Library card online?

Phoenix Public Library eCards are available online. These cards give Phoenix and other Maricopa County residents 24/7 access to Phoenix Public Library's online services. Register for an eCard now.​​​​

I have a Phoenix Public Library Card. Do I have to also sign up for an eCard in order to access all the library has to offer through the website?

If you already have a Phoenix Public Library card, you do not need an additional eCard as you have access to all Phoenix Public Library online services.

What if I had a Phoenix Public Library card a long time ago or I know that my library card is expired?

If you know that your library card is expired, you may renew it online by completing the Renew Your Library Card or Update Your Address form. If you don’t know whether your library card is current or not, please call 602-262-4636 Monday, Friday & Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and a Phoenix Public Library librarian will assist you.

​eLibrary 

I am having difficulty downloading an eBook or other downloadable media to my phone or device, what can I do?

First, try visiting our “Device Advice” page which offers quite a bit of insight and detail regarding how to utilize a number of devices, operating systems with a number of our platforms.

Also, feel free to contact us for more personalized assistance. If you are having difficulty with downloading materials checked out through Greater Phoenix Digital Library/Overdrive, please complete the “Help with Greater Phoenix Digital Library (Overdrive)” form. For all downloadable digital items that are not offered through Greater Phoenix Digital Library/Overdrive, please complete the “Help with eBooks and Downloadable Media” form. You can also call 602-262-4636.

​Can I check out digital materials if my card is suspended due to fees?

Yes, customers can still access digital materials with their library card in this case. 

​Can you extend check out periods for eBooks and eAudiobooks?

No. Check out periods for eBooks and Audio Books are currently 14 days and will be automatically returned at that time.

Item Recommendations 

Can I recommend a specific purchase to the Library, such as a book, movie, or music title?

You may submit your recommendations by phoning our Call Center at 602-262-4636. You may also submit your recommendation online by completing the Suggest a Purchase form.  Please be aware that you will be prompted to log in with your library card to submit a suggestion.  Each cardholder may suggest up to 10 titles per month.  For efficiency, p​lease include only 1 title per form.  Suggestions that do not include a valid email address for notification will not be considered.

Curbside Service

How does Curbside Service work?

Step One:                  

Reserve your items through My Account.

Step Two:  

  • After you receive your notice that your item(s) are available, drive to your library location during the following Curbside Service hours. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, wear a face covering and practice appropriate social distancing at all times.

Hours for all locations (with the exception of South Mountain Community Library):

Monday through Saturday
8 a.m. to noon
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday
5 to 7 p.m.

  • You do not need to call ahead or book an appointment
  • Be sure to bring your cell phone and library card number or account number (located along the bottom of the bar code on the back of your card) with you.

Step Three:             

  • Follow posted instructions
  • Please wait in your car
  • Call the posted phone number and have your library card number ready
  • Library staff will check out your held item(s) and deliver them to the trunk or rear of your vehicle

Services and Programs During Closure

What process is in place for book drop use?​

Book drops at all Phoenix Public Library locations (with the exception of South Mountain Community Library as South Mountain Community College’s campus remains closed) are available for customers to return their checked out items. 

In order to ensure the health and safety of our staff and customers, we are holding all returned items for a minimum of 4 days before checking those items in. Depending on the time and day you return an item, as compared with library hours of operation, it could take 5-7 days for your library account to reflect a returned item. If you have returned your item(s) and that is not yet reflected on your account, please feel free to contact us at 602-262-4636.

What do I do if I still have physical items checked out?

Book drops are open at all Phoenix Public Library locations with the exception of South Mountain Community Library. You may return materials you are finished with or please continue to enjoy them! 

Phoenix Public Library became a fine free library system in November 2019 so no need to worry about incurring any late returned fines.

How long can I keep my checked out items?

Phoenix Public Library is returning to observing our standard loan period of 21 days for all physical items. You should receive a courtesy notice 3 days before the due date *be sure to keep your contact information current through My Account associated with your library account. Our Auto Renew service will automatically renew your eligible items on the due date, up to a maximum of six times, as long as:

  • No holds have been placed on them by other library customers and/or
  • The current amount owed on your account does not exceed $25.
  • *Best Picks items cannot be renewal

What is happening to holds during Phoenix Public Library’s temporary closure? 

If you placed a hold on an item prior to our temporary closure effective March 16 and received notification that was ready for pickup, your item remained on the shelf at its designated location. You should be receiving a notification that this item is ready for pickup now that Curbside Service is available. If you requested your hold be picked up at South Mountain Community Library, which remains fully closed, your hold will be available for pickup at Ocotillo Library.

You may place up to 15 holds for pickup with Curbside Service.

When does Phoenix Public Library plan to reopen?

We understand our expanded eResources, online programing, and Curbside Service is not the same as being able to visit us in person. As soon as it’s safe to do so, we look forward to providing all of the services you come to expect.

​Can I still get help with continuing education options like college, trade schools or Career Online High School?

Yes, College Depot has many online resources. You can also schedule one-on-one phone appointments with a College Depot staff member by calling 602-261-8847.

​What types of programs are currently available online?

Phoenix Public Library is offering several types of children’s programs such as Storytimes, Tools for School and STEAM online. Customers can also access language, craft and other programs on the Universal Class platform. Check our website regularly for new programs.

​What else is happening in Phoenix Public Library buildings during the temporary closure?

Buildings are being deep cleaned and secured during this time. Limited administrative functions and circulation functions in support of book returns and Curbside Service are being performed at our locations.

​Is Phoenix Public Library accepting donations?

No, we are not accepting donations at this time.

What is happening with Interlibrary Loan?


​Interlibrary Loan Department is unavailable until further notice.  We are unable to process any requests at this time.

If you have Interlibrary Loan materials that you would like to return, you may place them in a book drop at any Phoenix Public Library location, with the exception of Burton Barr Central Library and South Mountain Community Library.  Book drops are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  You will not be charged any overdue fees.

To return Interlibrary Loan materials to Burton Barr Central Library, please bring them during Curbside Service hours. Burton Barr Central Library's automated book drop will reject items that do not belong to Phoenix Public Library.   

South Mountain Community Library remains closed until further notice.

We are unable to provide a check-in receipt.
