First, what are you writing?

A screenplay? Short story? Novel? Children's book? What type or genre? This may affect where you go for sources on feedback and who you look to for publishing. Knowing what "format" or genre will give you an edge. It is more than simply saying "it's an action screenplay." Have you read other action screenplays? Do you know what young adult books tend to have in common? Have you noticed that children's books are illustrated by professionals and not the author's children?

Self-Publish

Self-publishing is an alternative many authors consider. However, it is not as clear cut as asking someone to publish your book. You can publish in print or digital, do-it-all-yourself or pay others for help. You can find these companies through an online search or through advertisements. Since the industry is still fairly new, always read carefully the terms of a company that helps you self-publish. You may wish to join online boards and seek the experience and advice of others.
