Black bear : a story of siblinghood and survivalBlack bear : a story of siblinghood and survivalMoyles, Trina8829833Book9798897100347

"I know you might be thinking, “Dude, another animal book? It's only the third month of this gig and you're already doing bears.” True, but wait! This book is much more than a reflection on ursids, much like another book I loved, Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton, was so much more than tales of a leaping lagomorph.

Trina Moyles newest book, Black Bear, is poignant, heartbreaking and beautiful. Yes, there's a good deal of fascinating information on North America's black bear, but this lyrical reflection on youth, siblings and addiction never gets bogged down in too much biology for the average reader. Nor, too much family stuff for the more outdoorsy-focused, to be honest.

Born in northern Canada, Moyles was raised around wildlife since her father was the local game warden. Skunks, coyotes and, yes, bears were part of her life, as was her ever-present older brother, Brendan. As they both navigated the resource-extraction boom of the 1990s, the impact of changing personalities, partisan politics, economic upheaval and environmental destruction all begin to forever alter the land, their family and their lives. Moyles is an honest writer, never one to whitewash family secrets or individual failings, even her own.

I found reading this book a gorgeous trip to a land so different from our desert home and yet the universal themes of love, growth and change (and yeah, the cool bears!!) enchanted me. 4.5 Jags!"

- Bill

https://discover.phoenixpubliclibrary.org/search?query=%22black%20bear%22%20trina%20moyles&searchType=everything&pageSize=10

The gales of November : the untold story of the Edmund FitzgeraldThe gales of November : the untold story of the Edmund FitzgeraldBacon, John U., 1964- author.8579128Book1324094648

Those of us of a certain age have heard Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on repeat for years and years. C’mon, you know the words! “The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee…” Anyone??? Ok…

A new bestseller by John X. Bacon tells the story of the “Mighty Fitz” in The Gales of November. Even though most readers presumably know how the story ends, Bacon manages to keep the narrative flowing for over 400 pages. And that, in my opinion, is the book’s weakness. I found some of the details interesting and useful. However, multiple tales of the directions to, and décor of, various dive bars along the lakes that the crew frequented, for example, seems to border on blatant padding. “Just up the hill from the dock and to the left on Birch Street was Fred’s. Linoleum floors, yellow lights, cold beers, cigarettes and 25 cents for 3 plays on the jukebox.” I hate to admit it, but after about 300 pages of that kind of detail, I was a bit exasperated. “Excuse me, can the dang ship start sinking already?”

The above comment should not imply I found the book dull. On the contrary, some of the details on the incredible Great Lakes and their size, unique weather and wave patterns and the ferocious storms that can strike with little warning had me feeling a bit queasy. And the 29 crew members who perished get respectful and fond profiles. I certainly learned much about the development of shipping on the Great Lakes, the economics of a ship’s Plimsoll line, everything I ever wanted to know about taconite, how Gordon Lightfoot wrote his tune and even which 1970s hit was the absolute favorite of the lakers working the big ships.

Overall, worth reading but in need of some tightening up. 3.5 Jags!

https://discover.phoenixpubliclibrary.org/search?query=%22the%20gales%20of%20november%22%20bacon&searchType=everything&pageSize=10
