What is 1,2,3 Talk with Me?

1,2,3 Talk with Me is a free 8-week program for parents and caregivers that focuses on early talk to build babies’ brains. The program is based on the LENA Start curriculum which teaches caregivers 14 Talking Tips to use with their child. During the program, participants get to use a LENA talk pedometer once a week at home to measure early talk with their child.

Who is it for?

1,2,3 Talk with Me is for caregivers who have children between the ages birth to 32 months. Participants are expected to attend all 8 weeks of the program and want to:

Learn how talk builds their baby’s brain.
Practice 14 Talking Tips at home to increase talk with their baby.
Receive a weekly report on early talk with their child.
Share experiences with other caregivers in a weekly group session.

What can I expect?

Online classes are held once a week in a live, group session. Before class, participants watch videos about early talk and complete activities in a parent guide. During the online group session, an instructor guides caregivers in talking about what they learned. One day per week caregivers will use a LENA talk pedometer to measure early talk with their child and receive a personal report with the results. All participants who finish the class will receive 8 free books for their child.

Where can I take the class?

Phoenix Public Library offers 1,2,3 Talk with Me classes online so participants can attend from home. Weekly group sessions are offered online using the WebEx platform.

The library occasionally partners with community organizations to host in-person classes. During in-person sessions, all videos, activities, and discussions happen during class. Caregivers will use a LENA talk pedometer to measure early talk with their child one day per week at home and receive a personal report during class. Classes are for adults only and childcare may be provided by the partnering organization.
