Her first is a whimsical and endearing coming-of-age literary novel based on her native Sri Lanka. </span><span data-contrast="auto" lang="EN-US"><em>A Maiden's Prayer: A Family Story Set</em> in 1970s Sri Lanka</span><span data-contrast="auto" lang="EN-US"> is narrated with wit and warmth by teenager Tamara de Silva, who presents the predicament of her bachelor uncle who is reluctant to marry in the face of family pressure. The winner of two runner-up awards, the book is suitable for readers 15 years and up. </span><span data-ccp-props="{}"> </span></p><div><p><span data-contrast="auto" lang="EN-US">Perera's recent work, </span><span data-contrast="auto" lang="EN-US">Two Friends on Many Roads: Travel Tales from Near and Far</span><span data-contrast="auto" lang="EN-US">, is a book of short stories she co-authored with her friend, librarian Romany Kadurugamuwa. The writing evokes rich, sensory details of the places they explored and outlines dialogue with the quirky people they met. Cultural insight, the political background, historical context, and other pertinent information are thrown in to help glean knowledge from the reading journey.
